What to see around Andorra, over both borders

Andorra is so small that the best part of a day out often lies across a border. To the south, in Catalonia, is the town that explains half the country’s story. To the east, the Cerdanya, a broad, sunny valley unlike Andorra’s narrow ones. And to the north, over Envalira, the French Ariège, with castles and painted caves. Here’s what I’d see, based on what the local tourist offices publish, with one caveat up front. I haven’t found official road distances to most of these places, so I only give them where there’s a source.

La Seu d’Urgell, just to the south

It’s the first town you reach leaving Andorra on the N-145, and for me it’s the trip to make. Grandvalira puts it 30 km from Encamp. Close by is the Andorra-La Seu airport, 7.8 km out of town, though its flight schedule for winter 2026-27 isn’t confirmed. The town’s tourist office notes a Bronze Age settlement on the hill of Castellciutat and a first cathedral consecrated from the 6th century onwards. Today there’s a guided medieval walk and the Parc del Segre for rafting.

La Seu matters for understanding Andorra, because it’s the seat of the Bishop of Urgell, one of the country’s two co-princes. If that arrangement is new to you, read up on the co-princes of Andorra first. And if you’re around in mid-October, you’ll catch the Sant Ermengol fair, from Friday 16 (afternoon) to Sunday 18 October 2026, with 355 stalls and 47 cheesemakers at its Pyrenean artisan cheese fair. Its tourism area is devoted to the joint bid by La Seu, Andorra and Foix for UNESCO status.

The Cerdanya, the wide valley

East of La Seu, the Cerdanya opens out, a district of 17 municipalities hugging the French border. Its tourist office picks out two places I wouldn’t miss. Puigcerdà, at 1,202 m, is the capital, pressed up against France, with its bell tower and lake. And Llívia, at 1,224 m, is a one-off, a Spanish village that since the 17th century has been completely surrounded by French territory. It has a town museum with pieces from its old pharmacy and a music festival in August and December. The district tourist office is on the N-260 by Puigcerdà, and note that it closes on Mondays and Tuesdays.

In winter, Alp has the La Molina and Masella ski areas. If you’re already skiing in Andorra that’s no reason to go, but it’s handy to know.

The Ariège, over Envalira

Heading north over the Port d’Envalira you enter France at Pas de la Casa. If you drove down from Toulouse, this is the country you crossed on the way in, and plenty of it deserves more than a glance through the windscreen. Ariège tourism is clear about its highlights. Foix castle, with a visit of around four hours built round Gaston Fébus. Montségur, the Cathar castle at 1,207 m, with guided visits from May to September. And the caves, six open to visitors across the department, including Niaux, with paintings more than 14,000 years old, and Le Mas d’Azil. Villages such as Mirepoix, with its half-timbered houses, and Saint-Lizier round off the list.

Without a car, the Hife coach does the job. It calls at Andorra la Vella, Encamp, Canillo, Soldeu and the border village before dropping down to L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre and Ax-les-Thermes, twice a day in each direction, with times set to meet the French trains. From there, the railway takes over for the run down the valley towards Foix and Toulouse. More in train to Andorra and Toulouse to Andorra.

Sleeping outside Andorra?

Some people look at hotels in La Seu or Puigcerdà expecting them to be cheaper. No official source I’ve read compares the two, so I won’t promise it. What I do know is that you’d pay for the drive in every day, and in winter that drive can involve chains and a mountain pass. For a night or two on a day-trip loop, fine, and La Seu has something for every budget, from guesthouses to boutique hotels, according to its tourist office.
