Madrid to Andorra without losing a whole day

If you’re putting Madrid and Andorra on the same trip, they look closer on the map than they are. It’s 613 km to Andorra la Vella, and the last part is a mountain road. That shapes how you should plan it, so here’s what I’d do and where the popular flight idea falls down.

The train to Lleida, my pick

Andorra Turisme points visitors coming through Spain towards Lleida Pirineus station, served by high-speed trains from Madrid Puerta de Atocha. Andorra by Bus then picks up at Lleida railway station every two hours from 10:00 to 22:00, seven times a day. The coach takes 2 hours 15 minutes and costs €25 one way or €43 return on its website.

I like it because the long stretch is on the train, where you can read or work, and the mountain part is left to a driver who knows the road. The only care needed is timing your train to one of those departures, with some slack, so you’re not left two hours on the platform. Driving 613 km

The official distances sketch the route for you. Madrid is 613 km from Andorra la Vella, Zaragoza 300 and Lleida 185, so the sensible line runs through Zaragoza and Lleida to La Seu d’Urgell, where a single road, the N-145, carries all Spanish traffic up to the frontier. I don’t have an official driving time, but it’s a full day at the wheel.

A UK photocard licence is fine in Andorra, and in a hire car check that the contract allows the crossing. Between November and mid-May the car must carry chains or run on winter tyres, and a heavy fall of snow can block the way, as Spain’s foreign ministry points out. More in driving to Andorra.

What about a flight from Madrid?

It’s one of the most searched options, so let me be clear. Andorra has no airport. The one that gets called Andorra airport is Andorra-La Seu, in Montferrer, 17.4 km from the Andorran customs post. Its website publishes no 2026-27 scheduled season, and the scheduled flights page was last changed in October 2024. Until an airline confirms something in writing, I’d plan as if it didn’t exist. The air option that does work is flying to Barcelona and taking the direct coach from El Prat, about three and a half hours, from €33. Adding up airport time and coach, it isn’t quicker than the train to Lleida for me, but a cheap fare can tip it.

The ALSA direct coach

Andorra Turisme’s official guide lists an ALSA line from Madrid to Andorra. It’s the only way to go without changing and without driving. I couldn’t find its fare or times from an official source, so I won’t quote figures, and I’d check ALSA’s own website if a single ride appeals.

A family or a group?

The sums change here. Four train tickets plus four Lleida coach returns at €43 each add up, and a hire car starts to make sense despite the 613 km, especially with skis, boots and helmets to carry. If you drive, I’d break the journey or start very early, so you’re not doing the final mountain stretch in the dark. Before you leave Madrid

Carry your passport, since there’s customs on the way in and out and your passport has to satisfy the Schengen rules on age and validity. Medical insurance is essential too, because Andorra doesn’t recognise the GHIC. Check your phone plan as well. Andorra is not part of Europe’s free roaming zone, and a UK tariff that includes Spain won’t necessarily include Andorra, so look up your network’s rates or buy the tourist board’s own Andorra eSIM, priced from €4.95. And if you arrive on 1 January, 14 March, 8 September or 25 December, expect the shops to be shut (on 14 March only if it falls on a weekday), which matters if shopping is half the point.
