A refuge in 1974, run by the Sans Marfany family since 1986
Hotel Grau Roig, sleeping inside Grandvalira with no village around
Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa is a 42-room hotel in the Grau Roig sector of Grandvalira, in the parish of Encamp, ten metres from the lifts. It began as a mountain refuge, became the sector's first hotel refuge in 1974 and has belonged to the Sans Marfany family since 1986. Guests get free use of the spa, a kids' club and four restaurants.
It's the hotel I'd pick in Andorra for a ski break as a couple or with small children where I don't intend to touch the car. I wouldn't choose it for nightlife or shopping, because beyond the door there's nothing but pistes and mountains.
Before you go
What I would keep in mind
-
01 Most beautiful
The last house before the mountains
The hotel calls itself the last house before the mountains, right where the skiing starts. There's no village around it, and in a country of shopping avenues that's exactly what sets it apart.
Grau Roig -
02 My tip
A ski room with lockers and direct access
Each room has its own locker in the Ski Room, with an electronic lock and a door straight onto Grandvalira's slopes. It's free for guests and saves lugging skis around.
Grandvalira -
03 To save money
Spa and kids' club included
The spa circuit is free for guests, and in winter the kids' club has staff from 2pm to 10pm included in the price. Plenty of hotels charge extra for both.

04 Worth the splurge
The Teatro del Vino, for a lucky few
A tasting menu with wine pairing that opens only on request, with at least 24 hours' notice and a handful of seats. The hotel's cellar runs to more than 300 labels.

05 Getting there
In summer, walk to the Pessons lakes
Once the snow goes, the hotel runs guided walks to the lakes and peaks around it. The Pessons cirque starts from the same sector.

What I would book
- Places to stayBooking.com Grau Roig for your dates Watch the room type. The Romántica and the suites make for a very different stay from the Auténtica.
- Places to stayBooking.com Staying in Pas de la Casa, a few minutes away For something cheaper, with shops and bars, Pas de la Casa sits at the same end of Grandvalira.
Almost every ski hotel in Andorra sits in a village, with its high street, its shops and its winter traffic. Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa is the exception. It stands in Grandvalira’s Grau Roig sector, the only part of the resort with no houses around it, and the hotel describes itself as the last house before the mountains. For anyone coming purely to ski, I think it’s the most special bed in the country.
From mountain refuge to boutique hotel
The history explains the setting. In 1959 the sector’s first ski tow went in beside what was then a small refuge, and in 1974 that refuge became Grau Roig’s first hotel refuge. The Sans Marfany family bought it in 1986 and has been reshaping it ever since into today’s boutique hotel, without moving an inch. I cover the sector and its pistes on my Grau Roig page.
It has 42 rooms finished in oak, iron, stone and leather, with whirlpool baths, free Wi-Fi throughout and Bvlgari toiletries. The hotel doesn’t give a star rating on its website, and I won’t hand it stars that no official source confirms.
Which room would I choose?
There are five types, and the difference is size and view. The Auténtica and the Superior measure 25 to 30 m², the latter with a balcony facing the slopes. The Romántica goes up to 35 to 40 m², with sloping ceilings and a wooden barrel bath for two. The Junior Suite is 40 to 45 m² with a sofa bed for a child up to 12, and the Suite Deluxe reaches 65 m², with a separate lounge and a double sofa bed.
For two, my choice would be the Romántica, which is where this hotel stands out from anything else around. As a family with one child, the Junior Suite. With two children, the Suite Deluxe or two connecting Superiors, which the hotel offers on request.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa before prices climb.
Skiing without using the car
The practical reason to stay here is the door. The hotel is ten metres from the lifts of Grandvalira and has a Ski Room with a locker per room, an electronic lock and direct access to the piste, free for guests. For a family with small children, not having to drag skis, boots and kids across a car park first thing in the morning is half the holiday.
The kids’ club adds to that. In winter it’s staffed from 2pm to 10pm at no extra cost, and children play, paint or watch films without leaving the hotel. Those hours are clearly designed so parents can head to the spa or have dinner in peace.
A spa, four restaurants and a bar with a fire
The spa is free for guests, with a heated pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room and relaxation area, and under-16s aren’t allowed in from 3pm to 9pm. There’s a fitness room too and, in summer, a Summer Lounge with an outdoor hot tub for eight. If you’re weighing this against other hotels with a spa, I compare them in Andorra’s spa hotels.
You can eat well without going out. La Vaquería is the terrace on the slopes, 50 metres from the chairlift, serving Andorran and grilled dishes at lunchtime only, from 12pm to 4.30pm in winter. La Marmita is the high-mountain restaurant with a seasonal menu, and the hotel says several guides have rated its cellar the best in Andorra. La Fromagerie is all fondues and raclettes, and the Teatro del Vino is a tasting menu with wine pairing that opens only on request with 24 hours’ notice. The Copper Bar, with its fireplace and cocktails, is for winding down.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa before prices climb.
Getting there, and what it lacks
You arrive by the road up to the Envalira pass, which in winter means coming prepared; I explain how on the Port d’Envalira. The hotel arranges private transfers from Barcelona and Toulouse airports and even has a helipad, run by Heliand and subject to prior clearance.
What it lacks is life outside the hotel. There are no shops or bars on foot, and Pas de la Casa is a few minutes away by car. In summer, though, the hotel organises guided walks, via ferrata and nights in mountain refuges, and from the same sector you can climb to the Pessons lakes. To compare it with the other beds at this end of the country, see my guide to hotels in Pas de la Casa.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Pas de la Casa and choose by the reviews.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Andorra la Vella on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Andorra la Vella on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

| Venue | What it is | When |
|---|---|---|
| La Vaquería | Andorran and grilled dishes on the slopes, 50 m from the chairlift | Lunch only; winter 12pm-4.30pm, summer 1pm-3.30pm |

La Vaquería and La Marmita have vegetarian and coeliac-friendly options. For the Teatro del Vino the hotel gives 10 seats in one place and 15 in another, so I won't fix a number.
