8 September, Meritxell, Andorra's national day

Andorra doesn’t mark its national day with a military parade, having never had an army. It marks it with a Virgin. 8 September is the feast of Our Lady of Meritxell, the country’s patron saint, and on that one date every year the whole of Andorra, from Pas de la Casa to Sant Julià, turns towards the same small sanctuary in Canillo.

Why 8 September?

The feast of Meritxell is, as Andorra Turisme puts it, the day of the patron saint of Andorra, and the Govern’s working calendar treats it as one of the year’s key holidays. It’s one of four that tourism businesses can’t move to another day, alongside New Year’s Day, Constitution Day and Christmas Day. That’s why the whole country’s shops close on the 8th. In 2026 that was a Tuesday; in 2027 it’ll be a Wednesday.

There’s a legend behind the devotion, told by Andorra Turisme. A shepherd found a statue of the Virgin on Twelfth Night beside a rose bush in flower in midwinter, on the spot where the sanctuary now stands.

How the sanctuary celebrates

The heart of the day is Meritxell. The 2026 programme from the Comú de Canillo opened with torches carried in procession up from the Pariatges monument, continued with mass and organ music, and closed with food in the cloister and music for dancing outside. It’s a religious and a popular festival at once, with the feel of a small country getting together. For a visitor the etiquette is simple, dress as you would for any church service during the mass, and join in freely afterwards in the square.

The sanctuary’s usual hours are 9am to 8pm, but the Comú warns they can change for religious services, and on this day they do. Ricardo Bofill’s building and the old church deserve a visit of their own, covered in Meritxell Sanctuary.

A date with a memory

One fact gives the date real weight. Fire destroyed Meritxell’s old church in the early hours after the 1972 feast day. Bofill’s new sanctuary, completed in 1976, rose from that fire, and in 1994 the old chapel became an exhibition space. In 2014 Pope Francis made the sanctuary a minor basilica. Inside, Sergi Mas carved the patron saint of every parish, a reminder that the Virgin belongs to the whole country, and the Comú de Canillo places the sanctuary on the Marian Route with El Pilar, Torreciudad, Lourdes and Montserrat.

The name has a story too. According to the Comú’s leaflet, which cites the philologist Joan Coromines, Meritxell may come from the Latin meridiem, midday, which the sunlight falling on the altar represents.

My plan for the 8th

First, a word on timing. The programme changes from year to year, and nothing for 2027 was out when I wrote this at the end of September 2026, so check the Comú de Canillo’s page before you go rather than relying on the 2026 details.

I’d walk up. The pilgrims’ path leaves the Santa Creu chapel in Canillo and reaches the sanctuary in around 40 minutes, four almost flat kilometres with 50 m of climb, past the Creu dels Set Braços and the Creu de Carlemany. You arrive on foot, as people always have, and come down when the festivities wind up. The parish as a whole is in Canillo, Andorra’s largest parish. If you pass the Santa Creu chapel where the path starts, note that it’s usually shut and the Comú opens it every 14 September, six days later.

From the UK, the practical side is straightforward. Fly to Barcelona or Toulouse, take the coach to Andorra la Vella and the national bus up the valley, and pack comprehensive travel insurance, because Andorra doesn’t recognise the GHIC.

Worth remembering, with every shop shut the 8th is no good for shopping, and banks and offices close too. In summer 2026, Encamp’s Funicamp, which ended its season that day, was free on 8 September.
