Pas de la Casa, Andorra's ski and shopping town on the French border

Plenty of British skiers know Pas de la Casa before they know Andorra. It’s where many package holidays land, and it’s the first place you reach driving in from Toulouse. It isn’t pretty, and I won’t pretend otherwise, but it does two jobs very well, skiing from your door and shopping at altitude.

Encamp’s border town over the pass

Of the six settlements Encamp’s council recognises, Pas de la Casa is by far the most remote. Between it and Encamp village lie 25 km of road and the Envalira pass, while the French border runs along its edge. Andorra Tourism puts the town at 2,089 m, roughly 840 m higher than the parish capital.

Its story is short and tied to trade and snow. According to Andorra Tourism, it was a small isolated mountain settlement in the early twentieth century and grew into a commercial hub in the 1960s and 1970s. Grandvalira dates its ski area to 1956, the oldest part of today’s resort. The church of Sant Pere, the town’s patron, dates from 1985, and the exhibition room in the tourist office keeps a permanent display of old photographs of the place.

Skiing straight from town

The town sits at the foot of Grandvalira’s oldest sector, which links to Grau Roig and from there to the rest of the 215 km area. Grandvalira also points to its snow garden and the floodlit Tubs run, served by the La Solana chairlift, with its own €28.50 night pass sold only at the Pas de la Casa desks and machines.

For 2026-27, Grandvalira has set opening day for 4 December and closing day for 4 April. If you want a calmer place to learn, Grau Roig is a lift away and has the Kids Forest circuit. Before any drive in, check the Pas de la Casa weather, because the pass decides if you get through at all.

Shopping above 2,000 metres

Andorra Tourism calls Pas de la Casa the highest shopping town in Europe. Hypermarkets and department stores line the approaches, while perfume, jewellery, sports and car accessory shops fill the centre. Pyrénées has a store here with fashion, electronics, skiwear and groceries.

This is where I’d be careful. Prices can be tempting, but the customs allowances still apply when you fly home or cross back into France or Spain, and they’re per person. I’d read up on customs allowances before loading the car. Shops keep the national hours, until 20:00 Sunday to Thursday and 21:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.

What is there to do in summer?

Summer brings a different crowd. The easiest walk is to the Estany de les Abelletes, 808 m from the base of the Coll dels Isards chairlift, a trout lake split by the border. For something tougher, Andorra Tourism suggests the Pic Negre d’Envalira (2,816 m), with the trail leaving from the town itself.

A few kilometres away, the viewpoint on the Envalira pass sits above 2,400 m and looks down the Orient valley. On a wet day the sports centre has a 25 m pool, an outdoor hot tub, a sauna and a climbing wall. From 13 to 16 August 2026 the town hosted the fifth Travessa Pas de la Casa, which Andorra Tourism bills as the highest-altitude trail race in the country.

Nights out and the local calendar

Grandvalira doesn’t hold back. It says nightlife here is livelier than anywhere else in the resort and that the sector is one of the biggest draws for young people, which I think is a fair summary. If you want to be asleep by eleven, pick another base.

Three dates stand out. The village fiesta falls around Sant Pere’s day, 29 June, with a fishing contest and a communal lunch by Estany de les Abelletes. The Travessa comes in mid-August. And the Hibernation Festival staged its seventh edition on 20-22 March 2026, with no 2027 dates announced yet.

Getting here and where to stay

National bus L4 leaves Andorra la Vella every 30 minutes between 6:25 and 21:25 and stops at Encamp, Canillo and Grau Roig. Drivers from the Andorran side take the CG-2 over the pass or through the Envalira tunnel, emerging by Grau Roig, and snow chains or winter tyres are compulsory from 1 November to 15 May. From France, the N-22 brings you straight in, and Hife runs two daily coaches linked to SNCF trains at L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre.

Grandvalira says the sector has one of the biggest choices of accommodation in Andorra, much of it ski-in ski-out apartments. For a ski week, I’d put distance to the lift ahead of the view. My shortlist is in hotels in Pas de la Casa.
