Andorra in September, when the mountains empty out

I’d send anyone who wants to walk in Andorra in September. The mountains are as open as they were in August, the days are still long, and once the school holidays finish the paths and huts go quiet almost overnight. There’s one date to circle, the 8th, because it’s the national day and the country runs differently.

September weather, valley and summit

September averages 15.2 °C down in the valley, a 1991-2020 normal I’ve derived from the anomalies meteo.ad publishes each month for its Escaldes reference station. That’s a clear drop from August’s 19.2 °C, and you feel it most early in the morning and in the evening. Up at the lakes and cols it’s considerably colder, and I’d never start a high walk without a warm layer and a waterproof in the pack.

Andorra Turisme says summer and autumn are the country’s wettest seasons, so don’t bank on September being dry. What it does give you is good light and comfortable temperatures for long days on your feet. For the day it rains, Caldea in Escaldes-Engordany is the classic fallback.

Getting here is easier than in August too. Andorra by Bus charges €33 one way from Barcelona airport and €36 from Toulouse (website fares, September 2026). The paperwork that matters for walkers is insurance, because Andorra doesn’t accept the GHIC and GOV.UK advises comprehensive cover, ideally including mountain rescue.

The national day on the 8th

The date that matters is the day of Andorra’s patron saint, Our Lady of Meritxell. It’s the national day, and not a single shop in the country opens. In 2026 it was a Tuesday, and the Comú de Canillo’s programme at Meritxell ran from torches and an organ-accompanied mass to food in the cloister and dancing outside. In 2027 it falls on a Wednesday.

Your last clear window for the high country

This is the strongest reason to come now. Andorra Turisme’s route guides keep their recommended window for anything above 1,700 m to the three months from late June to late September. That covers most of the lakes people come to see and much of the Madriu valley. In October you can still go up in good weather, but you’re far more at the mercy of the forecast.

What winds down and what starts

September is when summer switches off bit by bit. Encamp’s Funicamp ran in summer 2026 until 8 September, free on that final day. Pal Arinsal’s Bike Park opened daily until 13 September and from Saturday 19 September to 12 October it opens at weekends only, so match your riding days to that.

On the other hand, the Andorran National Classical Orchestra begins its season at the Auditori Nacional in Ordino, listed by Andorra Turisme from 18 September 2026. And in Sant Julià de Lòria September brings the medieval fair, the Vila Medieval, which closed its 23rd edition on Sunday 27th with around fifty stalls.

Smaller, and more to my taste, is the village festival at El Forn in Canillo. The Comú fixed it for the penultimate Saturday of September when it began in 2025, and in 2026 it fell on the 20th, with mass in the chapel of Sant Pelegrí, a sausage barbecue and a children’s workshop. It’s a neighbours’ party that shows how life works in the high villages of the valley.

Is it worth it for a shopping trip?

Yes, bar one day. Shops keep their usual hours, with an extra hour on Friday and Saturday evenings, and the August queues have gone. The 2026 summer sales did end on 30 August, though, so don’t expect campaign discounts. The detail is in shopping in Andorra.
