Encamp, the parish that stretches from the valley to the French border

On most ski transfers from Toulouse or Barcelona, Encamp is simply where the coach turns off for the Funicamp. I think that sells it short. Within about a kilometre of the main road you’ll find three working museums, two Romanesque churches and the quickest lift from the capital up to Grandvalira, which makes it one of the most useful stops in the country.

A parish split in two by a mountain pass

Encamp ranks second of Andorra’s seven parishes in the official order of precedence and covers roughly 82 km², close to 18% of the country, according to its parish council. On 31 August 2026 it had 13,751 residents, 15.3% of Andorra’s population and 2.3% more than a year earlier, says the Statistics Department. The village stands at 1,250 m in the Valira d’Orient valley, and the parish borders Canillo to the north, Escaldes-Engordany to the south, Ordino and La Massana to the west, and both France and Spain to the east.

What makes Encamp odd is its shape. Andorra Tourism describes the parish as the settlements of Encamp and Pas de la Casa, 25 km apart, with Grau Roig and the Envalira pass in between. They feel like different countries, one a valley village and the other a high border town.

Which settlements make up Encamp?

The council lists six. Five of them run into one another along the valley (the village itself, Les Bons, Vila, El Tremat and La Mosquera), and the sixth is Pas de la Casa over the pass. Les Bons is the medieval cluster on its rocky spur, Vila sits on the western slope around its church of Sant Romà, and La Mosquera and El Tremat make up the old core, home to Casa Cristo, a water mill that still turns and the chapel of Sant Miquel. Pas de la Casa is a world apart, all shops, bars and pistes.

Grau Roig and Els Cortals don’t feature on that list. Grau Roig is a ski sector with no residential village, while Els Cortals is the valley of stone barns up the CS-220 road, which for me is the finest scenery within easy reach of the village.

Three museums on one short walk

The National Car Museum on Avinguda de Joan Martí holds around eighty cars, some sixty motorbikes and a hundred bicycles, from an 1885 steam carriage to 1980s sports cars. A few minutes away in La Mosquera, Casa Cristo shows how a family of day labourers lived until 1947, and it’s the one I’d put first. The third, the Sacred Art Museum, stands next to the parish church and opens by appointment.

There’s a fourth, the MW Electricity Museum, but Andorra Tourism lists it as closed for refurbishment, so leave it off your plan. All three open museums accept the PassMuseu, which halves the ticket at any three museums you pick, and in winter they close on Sundays and Mondays.

Santa Eulàlia and the village’s Romanesque heritage

The parish church, Santa Eulàlia d’Encamp, is visible from the whole valley road thanks to its 23 m Lombard bell tower, which the council calls the tallest of its style in Andorra. Inside are a Romanesque font, three Baroque altarpieces and what Andorra Tourism calls the oldest porch in the Principality, from the fourteenth century. Entry is free and guided visits need booking.

If you only have an hour, though, I’d head up to Les Bons first. Sant Romà, the tower and the dovecotes on their rock explain how a valley was watched over better than any display case could.

The Funicamp and Encamp’s mountains

The Funicamp is a 6 km funitel that lifts you from the village to Solanelles in 25 minutes, passing high above the Cortals valley. In winter it’s the Grandvalira access point nearest Andorra la Vella, and in summer 2026 it ran from 11 July to 8 September, with a return ticket at €16. The mid-station is the jumping-off point for lake walks, a beginners’ via ferrata and a small suspension bridge.

You don’t need the cable car to get into the hills. The Camí de les Pardines, a little over 3 km and nearly flat, leads to Engolasters lake past the open-air shrine of the Virgin of Ecology. The Encamp viewpoint, at 1,374 m on the CG-2, explains the dry-stone terraces that once made these slopes farmable.

Reaching Encamp and choosing a base

From Andorra la Vella it’s around 10 minutes on the CG-2, according to Grandvalira. National bus L2 comes every 12 to 15 minutes on weekdays and half-hourly at weekends on the autumn timetable in force since 9 September 2026. The tourist office is on Plaça del Consell, right in the centre.

My rule for beds is simple. If you’re skiing and driving, stay in the village near the Funicamp; if you want shops and nightlife, choose Pas de la Casa. I compare the two in hotels in Encamp. The parish also has the Encamp Tibetan bridge, and in late May the plaça dels Arínsols is the start of the Travessa d’Encamp.
