Andorra in May, green valleys and white peaks

May is when Andorra changes its skin. Down below, the meadows turn green and the terraces fill at lunchtime. Up top, the peaks are still white. In between, the summer activities begin to reopen. It’s a month of few people and big contrasts, and I think it’s the best one for getting to know the country without skis.

May’s temperature

May brings the valley floor to a 12.4°C (54°F) normal mean, as calculated from meteo.ad. That’s nearly four degrees up on April, and it’s the first average of the year that lets you drop the coat at midday. Mornings and evenings still call for an extra layer. As the tourist board points out, the high peaks hold snow into early June, so the gap between the valley and 2,500 metres is huge.

Is there still snow?

On the peaks, yes. On the pistes, no, because the resorts shut on 4 April 2027. With that snow up high, cols, lakes and ridges aren’t May terrain without winter mountain experience. Its advice for anything above 1,700 metres is to wait for the late June to late September window, stretching the season to May and October only in good weather. In May I’d stick to low and mid-level walks, like the ones in hiking in Andorra. Winter kit also stays compulsory for the first half of May, worth checking on any hire car.

Holidays and feast days

Labour Day, 1 May, appeared on the 2026 holiday list. Shops still open. The same day, Encamp holds its annual Diada de Sant Jaume dels Cortals, with a bus laid on up to the Cortals, according to the Comú.

Whit Monday, also a holiday in 2026 and sometimes as late as June, is the day of the Diada de Sant Romà de Vila, another Encamp feast. And on the last Saturday of the month Sant Julià de Lòria walks up to Canòlich Sanctuary, at 1,635 metres, for religious services, the blessing of bread and sardana dancing. Of everything in May’s calendar, that’s the one I’d plan around.

What reopens

May kicks off the adventure season. The tourist board gives May to late November for the zip-line park in Ordino, above the Segudet ravine, and May to late September for Bosc Aventura at Engolasters, with courses through the trees. Both are in zip lines Andorra.

Guided walks in the UNESCO-listed Madriu valley also restart, offered by the tourist board from May to October with booking. In 2026 the valley’s activity programme began on 14 May. And in Andorra la Vella, the Mercat de la Vall local produce market filled the old town one Saturday a month, the first, from May onwards in 2026. The 2027 dates will need checking once they’re out.

Food has a May slot too. The tourist board’s food calendar puts the Ruta de la Tapa, a tapas trail, in May, although no 2027 dates had been published. It’s also a good month for the bordas, the old stone mountain barns turned into restaurants, which I enjoy more before the summer crowds arrive.

What to pack

May plays tricks on your wardrobe. With a 12-degree average in the valley you won’t need a coat at noon, but first thing in the morning, or a few hundred metres higher, it’s cold again. I’d pack layers, a waterproof windproof jacket and walking boots, because the tourist board places most of the year’s rain between May and October. How I’d plan a May trip

Three or four nights, based in a valley village rather than a ski resort, since the resorts are between seasons. Ordino and La Massana both work well, with stone streets, bordas for dinner and trails leaving from the edge of the village. A guided day in the Madriu, one more on the zip lines or a mid-height trail, an evening at Caldea and an unhurried afternoon of shopping. Try to include the last Saturday of the month, for Canòlich. Travel is straightforward via Toulouse or Barcelona, and as a GHIC is useless in Andorra, insurance still matters. If you want to see where the year goes next, Andorra in June is when summer properly starts. If your dates fall earlier, the month before is in Andorra in April, and the whole season in Andorra in spring. Late in the month Encamp also hosts the Travessa d’Encamp, set for 28-30 May 2027 according to its organiser.
