Electronics in Andorra, and the maths a British buyer has to do

Andorra’s reputation for cheap gadgets goes back decades, and people still arrive with a shopping list of phones and cameras. For a British visitor, though, the shop is the easy bit. What decides whether it’s worth it is the allowance waiting at your UK airport, and hardly anyone mentions it until it’s too late.

Where the electronics shops are

Most of it happens on The Shopping Mile, the strip that joins Avinguda Meritxell and Fener Boulevard in Andorra la Vella with Vivand in Escaldes-Engordany. The tourist board says technology shops have a strong presence there, including photography specialists and stores showing the full range of a single international brand. That, to me, is Andorra’s real strength, being able to handle several competing models in half an hour on foot.

The other route is the department stores. Pyrénées, in the middle of the capital, has a FNAC on its ground floor covering computers, phones, audio, gaming, photography and TV. Outside the capital, the large stores in Sant Julià de Lòria, the first you reach from the Spanish border, sell consumer electronics alongside groceries. River keeps them on its first floor. Pyrénées Pas de la Casa has a FNAC area too, which suits you if you’ve driven up from Toulouse or you’re staying for the skiing.

The British maths

Here’s the part that changes everything. gov.uk lets you bring £390 of other goods into Great Britain without paying tax, or £270 if you arrive by private plane or boat. Phones, laptops, consoles and cameras all come out of that single figure. And if you go over, the tax and duty apply to the full value of the goods, not just the slice above the limit. You can’t combine your allowance with a partner’s either.

There’s a second border before you even reach the airport. If you drive out through Spain, Spanish customs apply their own allowance for travellers from Andorra, €900 of general goods per adult, and the Agencia Tributaria is clear that one item’s value can’t be split between people. Is it actually cheaper?

I’ll be straight with you, there’s no figure I can give, and nobody official has one either. Andorra’s government and tourist board don’t publish price comparisons, and screenshots on forums go out of date within weeks. What the tourist board does flag are the moments when I’d shop more keenly, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and sales that start earlier than in neighbouring countries.

My rule is simple. Note the exact model, storage and colour, check a UK retailer that same day, and compare in the shop with the receipt in your head. If the saving doesn’t cover the risk of a warranty handled abroad, walk away.

There’s also a practical point about timing. Shops here trade until eight in the evening from Sunday to Thursday, until nine on Friday and Saturday, and shut just four days a year. That means you can look on arrival, think it over at dinner and buy on your last morning, which is exactly how I’d handle anything expensive.

Before you switch it on

Receipts and complaints

Ask for an invoice with the serial number and ask how the guarantee is handled once you’re back in Britain. That’s the question I’d put before haggling over price. If anything goes wrong in the shop itself, every retailer keeps official complaint forms in four languages, and the government’s Consumer Service in Andorra la Vella deals with them free of charge.
