Spa hotels in Andorra, and when to sleep next to Caldea

Andorra has something very few mountain destinations can match, hot water rising out of the ground in the middle of town. Caldea is built on the Roc del Metge spring in Escaldes-Engordany, and half the country’s leisure revolves around it. So when someone asks me about spa hotels, I answer with a question of my own. Do you want the spa inside your hotel, or do you want to sleep next to Caldea? They’re different trips, and the answer changes where you stay.

Sleeping next to Caldea

If Caldea is the whole point, keep it simple. Upper Escaldes-Engordany begins at the top of Avinguda Carlemany and puts the thermal centre a stroll away, with Espai Caldes by the river and the tourist office on Plaça Santa Anna. Andorra Turisme sums the parish up with a label that says a lot, four and five-star hotels at the foot of the Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley.

The appeal is practical. You can go in the morning, head back for lunch and a nap, and return in the evening without touching a car or hunting for parking. The shopping street also carries on from here into Andorra la Vella. The whole parish is covered in hotels in Escaldes-Engordany.

Which spa hotels do the official sources mention?

Andorra Turisme has its own category for spa and massage hotels, but the listing loads with JavaScript and can’t be read. What I could read were its articles and those of the parish councils and Grandvalira, and these are the names that come out of them.

In Escaldes, Andorra Turisme singles out the Hotel Spa Termes Carlemany, in the upper town, for its mineral-rich water. On the same page it mentions the Roc Blanc, without saying where it is, describing more than seven decades of work with thermal water and a thermal pool, hot tub, sauna and Turkish bath. Up in the mountains, Grandvalira lists the Sport Hotel Hermitage & Spa in Soldeu and the Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa, right in the Grau Roig ski area, among the hotels carrying its label. In La Massana, the council’s tourism site presents Anyós Park as a resort with a large spa, and Princesa Parc as a spa hotel with a water circuit in the Arinsal valley. And in Ordino, the parish list gives four stars to Mu & Spa in La Cortinada.

I’m not adding star ratings that no official source gives, and I won’t rank these hotels on quality. What I will rank is the areas, because that’s what really shapes your stay.

Hotel spa or the country’s spa

Two different trips tend to get mixed up. One is the water break, two or three days of Caldea, shops and a good dinner, and for that the town wins every time. The other is a ski week with a spa waiting when you come off the slopes, and there the mountain hotel with its own circuit makes the difference. After six hours on the pistes, the last thing I’d want is to drive down to Escaldes.

With children, or adults only

Read the age rules before you book. Caldea takes children from 5 on the three-hour Classic ticket, from 12 on Plus and from 16 on Premium. For 3 to 8-year-olds there’s a kids’ spa, with a lagoon no deeper than 40 cm and instructors in charge, which children enter without their parents.

At the other end sits Inúu, Caldea’s adults-only area. If you’re a couple after quiet water, that’s your place, covered in Inúu. With small children, on the other hand, I’d give real weight to a hotel pool, because there will be afternoons when Caldea’s timings just don’t work.

What I don’t know, and won’t invent

Caldea’s prices aren’t openly published on its website, or at least couldn’t be read, so I’m not giving ticket prices. There’s no official list of hotel and Caldea packages either. My advice is to check which ticket a package includes, how many hours it covers and whether Inúu is extra before comparing prices. For the thermal centre itself, tickets and circuits, head to Caldea.
