Liechtenstein's museums, from the Vaduz museum mile to a house of 1518

For a country of 41,000 people, Liechtenstein has a lot of museums, and nearly all of them sit on one street. The tourist board calls it the Museumsmeile, the museum mile, six museums within a few hundred metres of the Städtle in Vaduz. That changes how you plan. You don’t choose between distant museums, you choose the day.

Which museums line the Städtle?

Working from south to north, first comes the LandesMuseum, the Liechtenstein National Museum, spread across three buildings including an old tavern and the house of the prince’s administrator. It tells the country’s story from prehistory to its industry, and if I could only enter one building, it would be this.

The Engländerbau, raised in 1933 for a lottery with English managers, holds three venues. The Treasure Chamber, where Fabergé eggs share a room with lunar rock, the PostMuseum, which keeps a copy of every stamp the country has issued, and on the second floor the Kunstraum, a room for contemporary art from the region.

And at number 32 stands the black cube of the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, joined inside to the white cube of the Hilti Art Foundation. They share a foyer, a desk and a ticket.

Seeing them without breaking the bank

This is the crux, and why I say you choose the day. On Wednesdays nobody pays at the Kunstmuseum or the Hilti, and the LandesMuseum keeps its doors open late, to 20:00. The PostMuseum and the Kunstraum are always free. Pay CHF 13 that day for the LandesMuseum and Treasure Chamber combined ticket and you’ve seen all six for that.

Thursday is the Kunstmuseum’s late night, open until 20:00. Monday is the worst day, with the Kunstmuseum, the Hilti and the LandesMuseum shut, although at Städtle 37 the Treasure Chamber, the PostMuseum and the Kunstraum carry on. And on 15 August, the national day, the big three open until 20:00 without charging.

My order for a day in Vaduz

I’d start at 10:00 in the LandesMuseum and give it an hour and a half, because it provides the context for everything else. Then the Treasure Chamber and the PostMuseum, side by side and done in an hour. Lunch, then the Hilti and the Kunstmuseum in the afternoon. With energy left, the Kunstraum, open from 13:00 to 17:00.

With children I’d switch the order. The Treasure Chamber first, because a piece of the Moon hooks anyone, and the Kunstmuseum has a play space for toddlers. The LandesMuseum’s SchlossCafé, with a garden and a children’s corner, needs no ticket.

Museums beyond Vaduz

Here things change, because the hours are short and you have to go on purpose. In Triesenberg, on the way to Malbun, the Walser Museum tells the story of the settlers from the Valais who arrived in the 13th century, with a 400-year-old house seen on a guided tour. It opens in the morning and shuts for three hours at lunchtime.

In Schellenberg, the farmhouse museum fills the Biedermann House, raised in logs in 1518 and taken apart and rebuilt several times. It’s free, but only opens from April to October, on two Sunday afternoons a month. In Schaan, DoMuS, the village museum, only opens when there’s an exhibition. And in Ruggell, the Küefer-Martis-Huus, a house of around 1730 devoted to water, opens on Friday to Sunday afternoons.

When and how

On Saturday 3 October 2026, from 18:00, comes the Lange Nacht der Museen, a museum night already listed by the Kunstraum and the LandesMuseum. It’s a good excuse to see the Städtle after dark.

One more note that isn’t a museum but feels like one. Since the prince’s residence is closed to the public, the Altes Kino in the centre shows its interior on screen instead, in the film «Fürstliche Momente», about 20 minutes long with a daily early-afternoon screening, free with the All Inclusive Erlebnispass. The Städtle museums are close to the Vaduz, Post bus stop, and under-16s pay nothing at any of them. To stay nearby and split the visit over two days, Vaduz is the easy choice.
