Sargans station to Vaduz, which bus to catch and when

Sargans is a middling Swiss railway station that hardly anyone would visit for its own sake, and it’s the most practical gateway to Liechtenstein. You step off the train, walk out to the bus stands and within half an hour you’re in central Vaduz. The one thing to get straight is which bus to take on which day, because there are two and they’re quite different.

The 12E, the weekday express

In its timetable the 12E is labelled ‘Eilkurs’, meaning express service. It leaves Sargans, Bahnhof on weekdays that aren’t public holidays, first at 06:36 and last at 19:36. At peak times it runs every half hour and in the middle of the day hourly, always at 36 minutes past. It takes 23 or 24 minutes to Vaduz, Post.

It barely stops on the way. Trübbach, a couple of stops in Balzers, four in Triesen and then into Vaduz through Rütti and Au. On most runs it carries on a minute further to Vaduz, Städtle, right on the pedestrian street lined with museums, which is where I’d hop off if heading straight for the sights. Route 11, the one that runs every day

Route 11 is the backbone of the network. Its official name says it all, Sargans to Feldkirch via Balzers, Schaan, Bendern and Eschen, so it crosses the whole country from south to north. From Sargans to Vaduz it takes about 32 minutes, because in Balzers and Triesen it stops at practically every corner.

In return it runs daily, Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays included, and around midday it leaves Sargans every thirty minutes. According to the 2026 annual table, departures carry on past ten at night, the last at 22:44. I’d double-check that final time in the SBB app before relying on it, because PDF timetables come with date exceptions.

A stop worth making, Balzers

Route 11’s slowness has a reward. It’s the line that drops you at the foot of Gutenberg Castle in Balzers, and the castle’s own website suggests getting off at Rietstrasse or Mälsnerdorf and walking up. The castle only opens by appointment from May to October, but the outer bailey can be explored all year, so if you have time, breaking the journey there beats going straight through. Tickets, payment and the cost of not having one

There’s no ticket office to hunt for. LIEmobil won’t take cash on board, whether francs or euros, and accepts any contactless card. You can also buy in the SBB Mobile or Fairtiq apps, and if you’re coming by train from Zurich it’s easiest to have bought the entire journey at once. LIEmobil’s fare zone stretches to Sargans, Bahnhof, so this trip sits within its system.

Fares go by zone. A single costs CHF 2 to CHF 5 and a day ticket for three or more zones is CHF 9. I haven’t found which zone Sargans falls in, and I’d rather not give a price I couldn’t confirm. What is clear is the price of travelling without a ticket, a CHF 10 fare plus a surcharge starting at CHF 70 or CHF 90, depending on the case. The full fare table is in Liechtenstein’s buses.

Two more details help. A single ticket isn’t a one-ride ticket but a time window, thirty minutes on one zone, sixty on two and a hundred and twenty from three, so a quick stop in Balzers on the way can fit inside it. And Swiss travelcards count here, with the GA valid on every LIEmobil bus and the Half Fare Card giving reduced singles and day tickets.

What if I arrive in the small hours?

If your train reaches Sargans after the last route 11, there’s the N2 night bus linking Sargans with Feldkirch via Balzers, Vaduz and Schaan. Its timetable shows a 01:28 departure from Sargans, only on the weekend nights set out in the table’s key. It’s a lifeline rather than a plan, and I wouldn’t choose it first with luggage.

Getting back

On the return, the 12E leaves Vaduz, Post between 04:53 and 18:53 on weekdays and has you at Sargans station in 23 minutes. Outside those hours, it’s route 11. If you’re connecting with a train to Zurich, the rest of the journey is in Zurich to Liechtenstein.
