Things to do in Liechtenstein in summer, from ridge to lake

If you ask me when to go to Liechtenstein, I’ll say summer, and not for the heat. It’s when the mountains open up, and they’re what sets this country apart from a half-day wander round Vaduz. Here’s what I’d do from June to September, up high and down below.

The mountains, the reason to come

Official figures put summer days in the valley at 20 to 28 degrees, which is warm without being oppressive, and the averages for each month are in Liechtenstein weather month by month. It’s better still up high. The Sareis chairlift lifts you from Malbun to 2,000 metres from 13 June, with the season closing on 18 October in 2026, and from there the Princess Gina Trail and the walk down past the Turna alp both start. Where can you swim in Liechtenstein?

There’s no sea, but there’s water. The Grossabünt swimming lake in Gamprin has more than 3,500 m² of bathing area fed by groundwater of drinking-water quality, with no chemicals, plus a diving zone, a lawn and a bistro. The municipality opens it every day but warns there are no lifeguards. In Vaduz the Mühleholz open-air pool ran from May to 8 September in 2026, with a slide over 100 metres long, for CHF 6 an adult. Cycling the Rhine valley

The tourist board counts more than 220 km of cycle paths, and EuroVelo 15, which follows the Rhine from end to end of Europe, runs right through the country. It’s flat and any bike will do. If you haven’t brought one, LIEbike has shared e-bikes in several municipalities at CHF 2 per half hour, although the company itself warns they’re not meant for very steep hills. To get up into the mountains, buses 21 and 22 carry bikes in summer.

Festivals and fixed dates

The big day is 15 August, the national day. In 2026 there was the official ceremony below the castle, a street party in the Städtle and the mountains lit up, but no fireworks, which were cancelled because of a total ban on fires. That day the Städtle museums open free from 10:00 to 20:00. July brings the music festivals in Liechtenstein. VaduzSoundz took place from 22 to 25 July 2026, and 2027 dates are already out for FL1.LIFE, 2 and 3 July in Schaan, and the LiGiTa guitar festival, 3 to 10 July.

Valley afternoons

When the heat builds, I’d come down to the valley late in the day. The Hofkellerei, the prince’s winery in Vaduz, opens its guided tasting to the public every afternoon from Monday to Saturday, about 90 minutes for CHF 19, and groups of up to six don’t need to book. Afterwards, a stroll round the Städtle as the sun drops. And if the heat won’t let up, the Kunstmuseum makes a good refuge, open until 20:00 on Thursdays and free on Wednesdays.

September, summer that lingers

September is still summer in the valley and brings its own dates. The Genussfestival in Vaduz, a covered food festival on the Rathausplatz, ran from 5 to 13 September 2026, according to its website. Mid-month the cattle come down from the Triesenberg alps, complete with a cow beauty contest, and on the first weekend of October Vaduz holds its annual fair. The Sareis chairlift keeps going until mid-October, and the paths empty out, which for me makes early September the sweet spot of the whole year.

Things to bear in mind

Two warnings. There are cows with calves in the mountains, and the tourist board’s advice is simple, give them a wide berth and keep any dog on a short lead. Leave pasture gates exactly as you found them, too. And the Sareis chairlift can stop for wind or storms, and the operator posts its live status on its front page, so I’d check its website on the day.
