DoMuS, the Schaan museum that opens when it has a story to tell

Schaan is Liechtenstein’s most populous municipality, with a Roman fort right in the middle, and its local museum is nothing like the ones in Vaduz. DoMuS has no permanent display. It opens when it has something to say, and says it from several houses around the village. That, for me, is its charm, a museum run for and by neighbours.

What DoMuS is

DoMuS is the municipality’s museum and gallery. According to the Historisches Lexikon it has used that name since 1998, building on the village museum that opened in 1982. Today it occupies the ground floor of Schaan town hall, at Landstrasse 19, right in the centre.

It does two jobs. It lends its room to artists born in Schaan, working there or rooted in the village, and it has a soft spot for group shows. It also stages its own exhibitions on history and social themes, using objects from the municipal collection and photos from the archives.

That collection began in the late 1960s, when the council set up a committee to gather old farm tools and craft equipment for a village museum. It reached about 600 objects and now runs to several thousand, almost all donated by residents. Since 2019 it has lived in the depot at Undera Forst 18. Part of it is online at sammlungen.li, and the depot can be visited on request.

What’s on in autumn 2026?

Until 18 October 2026 the show is «Materialistische Freundschaften», three artists on power, dependency and village habits. Beate Frommelt looks at alcohol in local life and Liechtenstein’s schnapps-distilling tradition. Ursula Wolf uses heated-tobacco sticks as her material. And Lilian Hasler arranges little plaster animals around a projected fire, somewhere between a campfire, a pub regulars’ table and a political meeting. To me it’s one of the more original ideas I’ve seen advertised in the country.

On top of that, until 30 April 2027 the town hall itself hosts «Kunst im Rathaus», art hung in the municipal building.

The Landweibel-Huus, DoMuS’s finest house

DoMuS also runs the Landweibel-Huus at Landstrasse 71-75, about a hundred metres south of the St. Peter junction. Its oldest part is a residential tower of 1562, probably built for the local magistrate Hans Schierscher. The name comes from Ludwig Beck, a Landweibel, a kind of constable and forerunner of the police, who lived in the southern part and ran the police post from his parlour.

It was restored in 2006 and opens during the summer exhibitions, on Fridays between 16:00 and 20:00 and at weekends between 14:00 and 18:00. In the barn there’s a hydraulic cider press from the 1930s that still works and gets fired up with schoolchildren in October. The walls of the Roman fort at Schaan and the church of St. Peter are very close, so I’d pair the two.

Schaan’s two smallest museums

DoMuS opens two tiny spaces on request. The Kopferschmetta, at Duxgass 11 on the lane up to the Dux chapel, is a coppersmith’s workshop of 1912 that survives complete with its forge. The last coppersmith, Lorenz Schierscher, made pans and other copper goods there until 1933, and the workshop closed in 1950. It’s one of the stops on Schaan’s culture trail.

The Specki-Tend is a barn built after the great Specki fire of 1874, with panels on that blaze, the cartwrights and cattle breeding, the backbone of village life in the 19th century.

With an hour to spare, I’d tie it all together on the Schaaner Kulturweg, a signposted loop of almost six kilometres with 21 panels, opened in 2007. It passes the Roman fort, St. Peter’s church, the Dux chapel, the theatre and the town hall, so it leads you past nearly everything DoMuS looks after. The municipality reckons on about an hour at walking pace, which suits an afternoon before or after an exhibition.

Fitting it in

The key thing is to check there’s a show on, because without one DoMuS doesn’t open to the public. When there is, it opens on Fridays from 14:00 to 20:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00. The municipal website doesn’t publish a price, so ask as you go in.
