Where to stay in Liechtenstein, area by area

Most people see Liechtenstein in an afternoon and sleep somewhere else. The average hotel stay was 1.75 nights in 2025, and the Office of Statistics says most visitors are day-trippers who never check in at all. I think that’s a mistake. With only 28 hotels in the country the choice is short, but the area you pick shapes the trip, and staying over comes with a perk that hardly anyone uses.

The perk of staying the night

Hotels and other places to stay issue the WELCOME Adventure Pass to overnight guests on a voluntary basis. It’s a free digital card covering every LIEmobil bus from your very first ride, even the one from the railway stations at Sargans, Buchs or Feldkirch, plus 20 % off at the national museum, the Kunstmuseum, the Citytrain and the Sareis chairlift. The Sonnenhof goes further and includes its own all-zones bus ticket in the room rate. Over two days of moving about, that adds up, and the plan I’d follow for them is in two days in Liechtenstein. I’d always ask about it when booking, since hotels aren’t obliged to hand it out. What each pass covers is spelled out in Liechtenstein Adventure Pass.

Vaduz, the easy base

For a first visit, Vaduz. The museums along the Städtle, the cathedral, the parliament and the Prince’s winery are all walkable, and the main bus lines meet at the Vaduz, Post stop. The capital logged 39,461 hotel nights in 2025 and averaged five hotels open over the summer, so supply is thin and conferences can fill it. The range runs from a four-star superior with a pool on the hillside to self check-in rooms right on the Städtle. Prices, addresses and my take on each are in hotels in Vaduz. The idea of renting Liechtenstein whole is a myth I couldn’t confirm, but a winegrower’s house from 1494 in Vaduz’s Oberdorf is genuinely let as a holiday home.

Malbun or Triesenberg for the mountains?

The busiest area for hotel nights isn’t the capital at all. It’s Triesenberg, which takes in Malbun and Steg, with 51,991 nights in 2025. That makes sense, because up there you have the only ski area, the cross-country trails at Steg and the Sareis chairlift, and stays in the Alpine hotels run longer in winter. Malbun is 30 minutes from Vaduz on line 21, which runs hourly. If you’re skiing or walking the hut route, sleep up top; my picks are in hotels in Malbun.

Triesenberg, at 886 m, is the compromise. The Walser village has the Rhine valley laid out below it and line 21 runs down to Vaduz or up to Malbun, but dinner out means a bus or a car. The Hotel Kulm, a three-star at 880 m, and the Hotel Oberland, with a stop right outside, are both here.

The Unterland and the valley towns

The north of the country, the Unterland, had 46,484 hotel nights in 2025 and the highest number of hotels open over the summer. Most are modern places aimed at business travellers or anyone arriving by car. Ruggell has the four-star kommod, with 48 rooms and flats three minutes from the Swiss motorway. Eschen has the B&B Hotel, with balconies over the valley. In Bendern, the Grand Casino runs its own hotel. For a budget bed on the valley floor, Schaan has the country’s only youth hostel and Triesen a campsite with a pool, both covered in hostels and camping in Liechtenstein. Triesen is also home to the family-run Hotel Schatzmann, open since 1984, which promises at least CHF 5 a night less than the booking sites if you book direct.

When the hotels fill up

Hotel beds across the country were 35.4 % occupied on average in 2025, so you’ll rarely be shut out if you book with some notice. August is the peak at 52.2 % and November the low at 25.3 %. In the mountains the calendar flips. The Alpine hotels reached 64.2 % in February and 50.8 % in January, deep in the ski season, then dropped to 7.8 % in November, when many close between seasons. If you’re heading to Malbun in February, I’d book earlier than for Vaduz in August.

What I’d check before booking

A lot of hotels here run without a front desk. Giessen, Vaduzerhof, kommod and the B&B in Eschen hand you a key card at a terminal. I find that practical when I’m arriving late by bus, but if you like having someone to ask, or you’re travelling with small children, pick somewhere staffed. Pack an adapter as well, since the sockets are the Swiss Type J, details in Liechtenstein plugs and sockets. Closing dates matter too. The Sonnenhof, for instance, shuts over the 2026-27 holidays, from 22 December to 10 January, just as the ski season gets going.
