Liechtenstein's casinos, from Bendern's Grand Casino to the border

Liechtenstein has casinos, and quite a few for a country of 41,000 people. In 2023, in fact, it held a vote on whether to ban them. The no side won comfortably, 73.3 % to 26.7 %, on a 70 % turnout. I’m not a gambler, so this isn’t a guide to strategy. It’s about which casinos are genuinely open, when, what they ask for at the door and whether it’s worth a look even if you won’t bet a single franc.

The four I could confirm

I’ve only included casinos with an active website of their own in September 2026, because lists from a year ago no longer match what’s open. That gives four. The Admiral group’s website also names a casino in Ruggell, but its page returns an error, so I’m not treating it as open.

The Grand Casino Liechtenstein, at Selemad 10 in Gamprin-Bendern, is the country’s largest. According to its website it covers about 7,000 m² over four floors and opens 365 days a year, 11:00 to 4:00, with live games from 15:00 and poker from 17:00, and its poker room holds up to 65 tables. It also has the Alpspitz restaurant, its own hotel and Floor Four, a rooftop bar on the fourth floor.

The Casino Schaanwald is at Vorarlbergerstrasse 210, right by the border crossing into Austria. It opened in 2017, has ten tables and more than 140 machines, opens daily 11:00 to 4:00, and its restaurant serves until 2:00. Buses 11, 13, 14 and 70 stop outside.

The Alpin Royal, at Im Rietacker 8 in Schaan, puts casino, restaurant and hotel in one building, with the casino open daily 11:00 to 4:00. And the Casino Admiral in Triesen, at Austrasse 6, runs its machines 11:00 to 3:00, until 4:00 on Friday and Saturday, with tables from 18:00.

Where they are

None is in Vaduz. Two are in the Unterland, the Grand Casino in Gamprin-Bendern, the village whose church hill saw the 1699 oath of loyalty to the Prince, and the other in the border hamlet of Schaanwald, on the road to Feldkirch. The remaining two are in the Oberland, in Schaan and Triesen, a few kilometres from the capital. If you’re not driving, Schaanwald is the easiest, since four bus lines stop at the door.

What do they ask for at the door?

ID and age. The Casino Admiral’s house rules explain that the law obliges it to check every guest’s identity on every visit and match it against the national database of people excluded from gambling. Citizens of Liechtenstein, Switzerland, the EU and the EEA can use an ID card or passport; everyone else, British visitors included, needs a passport. The minimum age is 18. At the Admiral they also photograph guests to verify identity and film the gaming floor, as the country’s law requires.

Since 7 January 2025, according to the Casino Schaanwald, an agreement with Switzerland to exchange exclusion lists has been in force, so a gambling ban applies in both countries. As for clothes, the Grand Casino asks men for long trousers and refuses entry in sportswear or work clothes; at Schaanwald, the tourist board says the code is smart casual.

Is it worth going if you don’t gamble?

In one case, I think so. Floor Four at the Grand Casino is a bar in the style of an English club, with whisky, gin, rum and cigars, and a terrace ringed by Swiss and Liechtenstein mountains. The tourist board says the bar and the Alpspitz restaurant can be visited without going onto the gaming floor. As a last drink of the night, it’s a curious spot. Money, euros and fake websites

At the Casino Schaanwald you can play in francs or euros at every table and machine, and winnings are paid in the currency you played, with no exchange loss. Entry and the cloakroom are free. Elsewhere the currency is the Swiss franc, as everywhere else in the country; more in currency and payments in Liechtenstein.

One warning I think matters. While looking for the official websites I came across online gambling pages using the names of the country’s casinos with no connection to them. The genuine addresses are gcli.li for the Grand Casino, das-casino.li for Schaanwald, alpin-royal.li, and casino.li for the Admiral.
