The Principality of Andorra

In Britain, Andorra tends to mean one thing, a good-value ski week in Soldeu or Pas de la Casa. That’s a fair reason to go, but it’s only half the country. The other half is 468 km² where more than 90% of the land is natural, with valleys that have no road at all, Romanesque churches you can walk into for free and a parliament whose roots go back to 1419. This page gathers all my guides to the principality, in the order I’d use them.

A small country wedged into the Pyrenees

Andorra fills a handful of high valleys between Catalonia to the south and the French départements of Ariège and Pyrénées-Orientales to the north. The Spanish foreign ministry puts the border with Spain at 63.7 km and the French one at 56.6 km. I pin it down properly in where is Andorra and in the map of Andorra, which shows the whole country.

Height is what defines the place. The average altitude is just under 2,000 metres and even the lowest point, where the Runer meets the Valira, sits at 840 m. The top is Comapedrosa at 2,942 m, and its neighbours get their own page in the mountains of Andorra. Seven parishes with seven personalities

The country is split into seven parishes, which work like municipalities, each with its own comú. Protocol puts Canillo first, followed by Encamp, Ordino, La Massana, the capital and Sant Julià de Lòria, with Escaldes-Engordany, created in 1978, bringing up the rear. The capital, Andorra la Vella, has grown into Escaldes so completely that you won’t notice the join. Canillo is the largest parish and Ordino the one that has kept its meadows and old barns best. Is Andorra really a country?

It’s what people search for most, and yes, it is. It grew out of two medieval pacts, the Pareatges of 1278 and 1288, in which a bishop and a count agreed to share the valleys, and it has had a written constitution since 14 March 1993, the year it joined the UN. To this day a French president and the Bishop of Urgell share the role of head of state. The full answer is in is Andorra a country.

My starting point

My list of places to visit in Andorra ranks them with a score and a reason. At the top I put the Madriu valley, 4,247 hectares without a single road, a World Heritage site since 2004. Close behind come the Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Caselles and Casa de la Vall, the stone house where the parliament met from 1702 to 2011.

If you’re after activities rather than monuments, the Canillo Tibetan bridge stretches 603 m with a drop of up to 158 m, and the Tobotronc at Naturland drops 5.3 km through the pines. Everything else, from spas to hiking, is in things to do in Andorra.

The three big resorts open for 2026-27 on 4 December and close on 4 April, which share 308 km of pistes between Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís. Day passes are dynamically priced, so I won’t quote a figure that changes by the week. What I can do is help you pick a resort, in skiing in Andorra.

In summer it’s a different country. For anything above 1,700 m, the tourist board’s advice is to go between late June and late September, which is also when I’d choose to be here. I match months to plans in the best time to visit Andorra.

How do you get to Andorra without an airport?

By road. From the UK the usual routes are a flight to Toulouse, then about €36 one way on the Andorra by Bus coach (September 2026 web fare), or a flight to Barcelona El Prat and a direct coach from €33. By car, the Spanish approach is the N-145 through La Seu d’Urgell, and from France on the N-22, N-20 or N-320. Between 1 November and 15 May, snow chains or winter tyres are compulsory. Once you’re there, the national bus reaches all seven parishes, with single fares from €1.90 to €4.80. The Foreign Office adds that your UK photocard licence is fine for driving.
