Using your phone in Andorra without a nasty roaming bill

Your phone is the quietest trap on a trip to Andorra. You cross the border, the handset switches network, and if you haven’t checked anything, the European roaming you rely on in Spain or France may simply stop applying. It isn’t a technical problem, it’s a money one, and five minutes before you leave will sort it. Here’s why it happens and what your options are, cheapest first.

Why your European roaming may not work

Because Andorra isn’t in the European Union. The European Commission sets it out on its Your Europe portal. The roam-like-at-home rules reach the EU, the three EEA members (Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein) and, on top of those, Ukraine and Moldova. Every other country is outside it, and Andorra is one of them.

British travellers have one more thing to think about. Since Brexit, UK networks aren’t bound by the EU’s roaming rules and set their own terms. Whether Andorra is on your list depends on your network and your plan, which is why I won’t quote a price. Spain’s Foreign Ministry gives Spanish travellers the same advice I’d give you, check the data and call prices with your operator before you go to avoid a very large bill. The official eSIM, from €4.95

The country’s own answer is the Andorra eSIM, sold through the tourist board’s website. Andorra Turisme describes it as an eSIM with no physical card and no roaming costs, from €4.95, that lets you keep your usual number. Physical SIM cards are sold locally too, if your phone doesn’t take an eSIM.

It’s the tidiest option if your network charges a lot, because you install it before you leave and forget about it. Plenty of international eSIM brands also advertise Andorra coverage. I haven’t seen their Andorra prices in a source I can check, so I’d compare the price per gigabyte with the official one before choosing.

Free Wi-Fi, more than you’d expect

If you only need maps and messages now and then, Wi-Fi may be enough. Andorra Turisme says there’s free Wi-Fi at the ski resorts, on the main streets, in public places and in shopping centres, with the public Andorra Wi-Fi network along The Shopping Mile. If you ski on the Andorra Pass, Grandvalira throws in unlimited Wi-Fi as well.

Your phone in the mountains

This is where a working phone stops being a luxury. Spain’s Foreign Ministry advises that anyone heading into the mountains should let someone know their route, take a phone with location tracking and keep the local emergency numbers handy. In Andorra those are 112 for emergencies, 116 for an ambulance, 110 for the police and 118 for the fire service, which also handles mountain rescue. gov.uk gives 112 for mountain rescue too. Calling Andorra, and calling from it

Andorra’s dialling code is +376, or 00 376. If you ring a hotel or restaurant in Andorra from the UK, you’ll need it in front of the number, and your network will bill it as a call abroad under its own tariff.

The same check for your bank card and your insurance

Roaming is just the most visible symptom of something broader. Andorra sits outside the EU, and that affects two other things worth checking on the same evening you look at your phone plan. The first is your bank card, since your provider may charge fees for spending or withdrawing cash there as if you were outside Europe; that’s covered in Andorra’s currency. The second is healthcare, since gov.uk states plainly that your GHIC or EHIC won’t be accepted in Andorra, which makes full travel insurance essential. All three can be sorted from the sofa, and all three can get expensive if you only discover them on the other side of the border.

What I’d do, step by step

First, look up the data price for Andorra in my network’s app. Second, if it’s steep, buy the official eSIM or compare it with another. Third, download offline maps for any area I plan to walk in. And fourth, if I’m using a second line, switch off data on my main SIM before the border so nothing slips through.
