El Tarter, the quieter way into Grandvalira

El Tarter is often described as Soldeu’s little brother, which I think undersells it. It shares the ski area, has its own World Cup run, lets you park for free and goes quiet at night. For families and anyone driving over from France or Spain, it’s often simply the smartest choice in the valley.

A way into Grandvalira with a World Cup run

Grandvalira calls El Tarter one of the liveliest sectors in the resort. The Àliga run was approved by the FIS for downhill racing in 2013, hosted its first World Cup race in 2016 and shared the 2019 and 2023 World Cup Finals with the Avet in Soldeu. If you ski well, it’s the run I wouldn’t miss.

Freestylers get the El Tarter Snowpark, which the resort says has the longest line of features in the Pyrenees and one of the longest in Europe. Younger children have the Bababoom Circus, a slope built to their size, and I cover the rest in family skiing in Andorra. Lifts here turn from 4 December to 4 April in 2026-27.

Parking, passes and getting around

This is where El Tarter earns its keep. The Àliga car park has 350 spaces and Grandvalira lists it as free, which is gold dust in this part of the valley. In the paid car parks in El Tarter, Soldeu and Canillo, an adult or senior Andorra Pass used that day gets you 50% off from 8:00 to 20:00. In winter the Prat de la Costa area also takes 30 motorhomes, with services.

Passes bought online can be collected from machines in the Obac building, skipping the ticket office. Because day passes follow dynamic pricing, I’m leaving the figure out, but the resort does state that booking online cuts up to 15% off. Without a car, national bus L4 runs from Andorra la Vella through Canillo and El Tarter to Pas de la Casa. If you drive over from France instead, remember that winter tyres or chains are compulsory in Andorra from 1 November to 15 May.

Après-ski at L’Abarset

Grandvalira describes the stage terrace at L’Abarset as the meeting point for après-ski across the resort, with a programme of gigs and parties. It’s the one thing that breaks the village’s calm as the lifts close, and I rather like that it sits by the slopes rather than among the houses. For more ideas, see après-ski in Andorra.

What is there to do in El Tarter in summer?

The village sits at the foot of the Incles valley, which opens between El Tarter and Soldeu. In high season private cars can’t go up, and an electric train takes you to the head of the valley, where the paths to Juclar, Cabana Sorda and Siscaró begin. Andorra Turisme says the train tickets are sold at the information hut beside the car park at the entrance to the valley. With one summer morning in this area, that’s where I’d spend it.

In summer 2026 the Comú also set up a giant 880 m² inflatable park in El Tarter, open from 20 June to 13 September, and launched a circular tourist bus linking Meritxell, Canillo, Ransol, El Tarter, Incles and Soldeu. It’s aimed at visitors without a car and makes it easy to see the whole parish in a day.

Sant Pere and the June fiesta

The village church is Sant Pere del Tarter, with a simple bell gable like those of Sant Bartomeu in Soldeu, Sant Jaume in Ransol and Sant Miquel in Prats. Residents of El Tarter and Incles meet the Comú outside it every autumn. The Sant Pere fiesta runs for three days in late June. In 2026 it closed with High Mass at 12:00, sardana dancing in the square at 13:00 and fireworks at 22:00.

A curiosity the Comú explains on its nature trail at Prats is that El Tarter, Incles and Soldeu share an underground heating network. A central plant pipes hot water to hotels, homes and public buildings, so each one doesn’t need its own boiler.

Staying in El Tarter
