Shopping in Andorra, where, when and how not to overdo it

For plenty of people, shopping is the reason to come, and fair enough. Andorra has an enormous retail scene for its size and hours you won’t find at home. For a British visitor there’s an extra factor the Spanish and French don’t face in the same way, a UK customs allowance that decides how much of it is really worth carrying home. Here’s where the shops are, when they open, when they don’t, and what I’d think about before reaching for the card.

Where the shops are

The tourist board counts more than a thousand shops in 468 km², and most sit on one strip. The Shopping Mile runs for over 1.5 km, partly pedestrianised, through Andorra la Vella on Fener Boulevard and Avinguda Meritxell, then on into Escaldes-Engordany as Vivand, Avinguda Carlemany. Fashion, perfume, electronics and sports brands are all here, along with plenty of places to stop for lunch. The main stretch has its own page, Avinguda Meritxell.

Around it are quieter areas. The capital’s old town and Riberaygua i Travesseres have neighbourhood shops, and upper Escaldes has long-established family businesses. Santa Coloma specialises in motoring, with motorbike and 4x4 accessories and tyres, plus camping and caravanning gear.

Beyond the centre, the two gateways double as shopping destinations. Pas de la Casa, right where France meets Andorra, greets you with hypermarkets and department stores on the way in and perfume and sports shops in the middle. Sant Julià de Lòria, the first parish from Spain, has several large stores a few kilometres from the border and, according to the tourist board, the biggest pharmacy in the country. In Canillo, La Massana and Ordino, it’s mostly ski and mountain shops.

When are the shops open?

Almost always. Shops close on only four dates, New Year, Christmas, Constitution Day on 14 March and Meritxell on 8 September. If 14 March falls at a weekend, they open anyway. The general hours are generous too, 8pm closing from Sunday to Thursday and 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, with each shop choosing its own morning opening time. Sunday afternoon shopping makes a weekend break easy to plan.

According to the tourist board, the sales arrive before they do across the border, with summer ones from late June and winter ones from late December, with Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well. The Shop in Andorra Festival takes place at the start of the winter season, but I haven’t found its 2026 dates published. The big stores and outlets are gathered in Andorra shopping centres.

The British maths before you buy

Here’s where I’d slow down. gov.uk sets a tax-free limit of £390 for other goods brought into Great Britain (£270 if you come in by private plane or boat), and if you go over you pay tax and duty on the full value, not just the part above the limit. You can’t pool allowances with anyone else. Alcohol and tobacco have separate allowances, which I set out in Andorra duty free allowance.

Before that, if you drive out through France or Spain you also meet their customs, which apply Andorra’s own limits. In practice I’d use Andorra for one or two considered purchases, a good pair of ski boots bought where you can try them properly, say, rather than a car boot full of electronics. Paying and complaining

The tourist board says cards are accepted everywhere, while currencies other than the euro usually aren’t, so there’s no point carrying sterling. There’s free wifi on the main streets and in shopping centres. If something goes wrong, you can ask any shop for the official complaint form (it comes in four languages) or turn to the Government’s Consumer Service, whose office is in Andorra la Vella, on Camí de la Grau.
