Hotels in Pas de la Casa, Andorra's border ski town

Pas de la Casa divides opinion, and I understand both sides. To some it’s the perfect ski town, with the piste at the door, late shops and a party every night. To others it’s a cluster of buildings on a cold col. My view is that it depends almost entirely on who you’re travelling with, and that next door there’s an alternative, Grau Roig, that plenty of people never consider.

An Andorran town on the French border

Pas de la Casa is one of the six official settlements of the parish of Encamp, yet it’s 25 km from Encamp village, on the far side of the Envalira pass. Drivers from France arrive on the N-22 and cross the border right here, a crossing that never closes, and Grandvalira bills it as its first entrance from the French side. If you’re driving from Toulouse, it’s the first Andorran town you’ll reach.

Without a car, the nearest station is L’Hospitalet-près-l’Andorre in France, about 11 km by road from the border according to Andorra Turisme, with trains from Toulouse and onward buses. Grandvalira mentions daily Hife coaches from there and from La Tour de Carol.

Andorra Turisme says the town’s shopping and skiing vocation took shape in the 1960s and 70s, growing alongside the ski resort. Today it calls Pas de la Casa the highest commercial urban centre in Europe, with hypermarkets and department stores at the entrances and specialist shops in the centre.

Who is Pas de la Casa for?

Grandvalira doesn’t mince its words. The nights are livelier than anywhere else in the ski area, with bars and packed parties, and it’s one of the sectors young people like most. There’s also a floodlit piste and, according to the resort, one of the widest choices of accommodation in Andorra. If your crowd wants to ski all day and party all night on foot, nowhere in the country makes it easier.

For the same reasons, it’s not where I’d take young children, or where I’d go for early nights. Self-catering dominates. Encamp council’s 2022 accommodation list was full of furnished apartments and aparthotels described as being at the foot of the slopes. One warning for the drive home. The UK government warns that French and Spanish customs take a hard line on Andorran tobacco, and customs can impound the excess and the vehicle. From Pas de la Casa, the French checkpoint is right there.

Grau Roig, the other way to stay

Close by, near where the Envalira tunnel comes out according to Grandvalira, lies Grau Roig. The resort calls it the only sector with no residential centre and the wildest in the ski area, with runs for every level, the Kids Forest children’s circuit, freeride terrain and the only approved speed-skiing track in the Iberian Peninsula. You can practically ski out of the car park, and the Cubil car park is free.

The Grau Roig Andorra Boutique Hotel & Spa is by far the most searched-for hotel here, and Grandvalira’s blog suggests it as a characterful stay right in the ski area. Buses, parking and the pass

National bus L4 links Andorra la Vella with Pas de la Casa, the longest route on the network, with a single of up to €4.80 in zone 3. Driving, Grandvalira has the free Costa Rodona car park in town and the paid Abelletes and Centre Esportiu car parks. For motorhomes in winter, the public Bullidor car park has 40 bays and Flor de Neu at Grau Roig has 25, the latter shut from 3 to 17 March for a festival.

The pass is what shapes a stay here. Envalira stands between Pas de la Casa and everything else, and through the cold months the law requires chains or winter tyres.
