A day trip to Andorra from Barcelona, by coach or on a tour

A day trip from Barcelona to Andorra sounds like a lot of coach for not much country, but done right it’s a perfectly reasonable day out. You spend about six hours on the road and eight to ten in Andorra. The trick is not trying to see everything, and picking your coaches well, which is where I’d start.

Is a day trip actually worth it?

It depends what you want. If it’s a wander round the capital, some shopping and a soak in a thermal spa, then yes, because all of that is in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany, two parishes that run into each other a few minutes on foot from the bus station. If you’re after lakes, high valleys or remote Romanesque churches, one day without a car won’t do it, and I’d stay a night.

Andorra la Vella is 208 km from Barcelona by road, according to the tourist board, but the last stretch climbs into the mountains. So think in coach hours, not kilometres.

Going independently by coach

This is what I’d do. Andorra by Bus has a service that leaves Terminal 1 at 06:45 and calls at Diagonal at 07:15, arriving in Andorra at 10:00. Coming back, one leaves at 18:00 and reaches Diagonal at 21:00, and a later one at 20:00 gets in at 23:00. On its website the return fare is €56.

What about an organised tour?

Plenty of agencies sell an Andorra day trip from Barcelona. I have no official source for their prices or stops, so I can only tell you how I’d judge one. A tour earns its price if it includes something you can’t do by public coach in a day, such as a drive up a valley or to a viewpoint. If it simply parks in Andorra la Vella and gives you a few free hours, the scheduled coach does the same thing for less and with more flexible return times.

Before booking, I’d ask three things. How many hours you really get in Andorra, whether any entry fee is included, and what time you’re back in Barcelona.

How I’d spend eight hours there

Off the coach, I’d head straight for the old quarter of the capital, with Casa de la Vall as the landmark, before the streets fill up. Around lunchtime, Avinguda Meritxell, part of what Andorra calls the Shopping Mile, more than 1.5 km of shops running on to Avinguda Carlemany in Escaldes. The afternoon is for Caldea or more browsing, with the heavy buys saved for last.

Picking the day and the season

Any day works except the four when shops shut, but I’d think about the season too. Between 1 November and 15 May the roads up are winter roads, and heavy snow can hold the coach up, so I wouldn’t plan a day trip that ends with a tight connection, like an evening flight home from El Prat. The border on the way back

The return coach goes through Spanish customs, and what you’ve bought can be checked. The Spanish tax agency sets allowances per person that can’t be pooled between travellers, with tobacco and alcohol only from age 17 and a general limit of €900 of other goods.
