Andorra in December, from opening day to New Year's Eve

December is when Andorra changes gear. It goes from November’s calm to full ski season in a single weekend, and in 2026 that weekend lands on Spain’s biggest winter bank holiday. Handled well, it’s a great month; handled badly, it’s a queue up the Envalira pass and a hotel at Christmas prices. The difference is almost entirely down to which week you pick.

December weather

Down in the valley, December’s normal is 3.7 °C (1991-2020, FEDA station, my own calculation from meteo.ad’s bulletins). Only January is colder. Up at ski level it’s a different story, and Andorra Turisme puts the heaviest snowfalls of the year between December and February. Chains or winter tyres have been compulsory since 1 November, and in December you should expect to use them. If you’re hiring a car in Barcelona or Toulouse, ask for winter equipment when you book. And since Andorra doesn’t take the GHIC, make sure your travel insurance covers winter sports.

Opening day, 4 December

Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís open the 2026-27 season on Friday 4 December, lifts running 9am to 5pm, with closing planned for 4 April 2027. Grandvalira warns that both dates depend on the weather. Naturland has been open since 28 November and, over the 5-8 December weekend, adds its 1600 level too. One date matters for your wallet. The non-resident Andorra Pass costs €1,019 until Wednesday 9th and €1,433 from Thursday 10th; the Nord Pass goes from €788 to €977. If you’ll ski several weeks, buy before then. For odd days, day passes are dynamically priced and Grandvalira promises up to 15 % off buying online.

The Spanish long weekend, and how to dodge it

8 December is a holiday in both Andorra and Spain, and in 2026 it’s a Tuesday, so the Spanish bridge runs from Saturday 5th to Tuesday 8th, exactly the first weekend of the season. Expect atmosphere, snow if the weather plays ball, and busy roads from Barcelona. In Andorra the shops stay open on the 8th, as it isn’t one of the four closure days.

For a UK skier the answer is simple. Come the week after, from the 9th to the 18th, when the season’s under way and the Christmas crowds haven’t arrived. If a package suits you better, the options are in Andorra ski holidays.

Christmas in the streets and villages

December is also market month. According to Andorra Turisme, the capital builds a festive village of wooden chalets, Escaldes-Engordany opens Sabors d’Advent for the first half of the month, and around the 13th the Santa Llúcia fair comes to Encamp, Ordino and Sant Julià de Lòria, usually staying until Christmas. The 2026 dates haven’t been published yet. In Ordino, the bear play L’última Ossa returns in the opening days of the month, performed in the Casa d’Areny-Plandolit gardens since it was revived in 2017.

On the 25th nothing opens anywhere in the country, while Boxing Day, Sant Esteve, is a holiday with the shops trading. Naturland opens on the 25th, and Grandvalira drops its group discount from 25 December to 6 January. Shopping and the winter sales

Apart from the 25th, shops trade all month on their normal hours, staying open an hour later on Friday and Saturday. Andorra Turisme puts the start of the winter sales at the end of December. If you’re mixing skiing with present buying, shop in the evenings once the lifts close at 5pm. Grandvalira’s stand in the Illa Carlemany centre changes hours on 14 December, closing for lunch from 2pm to 3pm, handy to know if you’re collecting a pass in person.

There’s also a December plan that has nothing to do with skiing. In La Massana, the Comapedrosa park, recognised as a Starlight destination, runs night-time snowshoe outings from the Coll de la Botella from 1 December on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, according to Andorra Turisme. Long, cold December nights suit it well.

December opens a winter that carries on in Andorra in January, and the season beyond the pistes is in Andorra in winter. If you arrive before the lifts open, the month before is in Andorra in November.
