Hotels in Sant Julià de Lòria, by the Spanish border

Sant Julià de Lòria is the parish almost everyone arriving from Spain drives straight through on the way to the capital. It’s the front door, the first parish after customs, and Andorra Turisme calls it the lowest-lying in the country. As a base it doesn’t suit every trip, but for some it’s exactly right.

Who should stay here?

Three kinds of traveller, in my view. Anyone driving up late from La Seu d’Urgell who’d rather not keep climbing in the dark. Shoppers, since Andorra Turisme says Sant Julià has more shopping centres than anywhere else in Andorra, plus plenty of cycling shops. And families heading for Naturland, which sits at La Rabassa, within the parish.

I wouldn’t send skiers here for Grandvalira or Pal Arinsal. Both big resorts lie north of Andorra la Vella, so every morning you’d be crossing the capital. I compare the ski villages in where to stay in Andorra.

Naturland, the big draw

Naturland is the parish’s mountain park, on two levels. At 1,600 m there’s the activity centre with the Tobotronc, a 5.3 km toboggan that Andorra Turisme bills as the longest nature toboggan in the world, plus zip lines and the Airtrekk. At 2,000 m there are 15 km of cross-country ski trails. In the 2026-27 season it opens a week ahead of the big resorts, on 28 November, and stays open to 4 April, with the upper level running daily and open even on Christmas Day and Twelfth Night. Before that, in autumn, the lower level opens at weekends only.

The Tobotronc needs a minimum height of 1.20 m and under-13s must be accompanied, so measure the kids before promising anything. The whole park is covered in Naturland. For a family week built around the park, I’d pick a hotel with parking in Sant Julià and drive up each morning, because the road to La Rabassa climbs well above the town and there’s no point hauling sledges and small children onto a bus.

Getting here without a car

This is where Sant Julià has a hidden advantage for British visitors flying into Barcelona. Andorra Direct Bus, from El Prat airport and Sants, stops outside the E.Leclerc in Sant Julià before ending at Andorra la Vella bus station, and it’s the only stop in between. The Andorra-La Seu airport is only 17.4 km from the border post, but its 2026-27 scheduled flights aren’t confirmed on its own website, so I wouldn’t plan around it. Within Andorra, the L1 links Sant Julià with Escaldes-Engordany via the capital, backed up by Express and Night buses, and a zone 1 single is €1.90.

Staying for the shops

If shopping is the point, Sant Julià makes sense as a base. Tills stay open into the evening all week, later still at the end of it, and the shutters come down on just New Year’s Day, Constitution Day, Meritxell Day and Christmas Day. The Spanish border never shuts, so you can cross whenever suits you. Before you fill the boot, though, remember that allowances are per person when you re-enter the EU, and British government advice flags tobacco as the item border officers watch most closely. Villages and wineries

Sant Julià council publishes no official list of settlements, but Andorra Turisme has pages for several. Auvinyà is my favourite, a recreated medieval village that’s entirely car-free. Nagol keeps Sant Serni church, from 1055, with Romanesque paintings, and Canòlich Sanctuary, at 1,635 m, holds its pilgrimage on the last Saturday in May. Fontaneda has just under 150 residents and the Mas Berenguer winery, and the parish has three more, Casa Auvinyà, Casa Beal and Casa Sabaté.

As for named hotels, no official register with ratings turned up, so I can’t vouch for any. My rule here is practical, near the coach stop if you’re arriving without a car, and with parking if you’re heading to Naturland. Add the tourist tax to the room rate, and remember that even a few kilometres from Spain, your GHIC won’t help you here.
