Pal Arinsal, La Massana's family ski area

Pal Arinsal is the resort I’d point you to if you don’t need 200 km to have a good week. It has 63, split between two sectors with their own character, and one advantage that’s worth a lot in Andorra, you ride up from the middle of the village without touching the car. Plenty of people still look for it as Vallnord, but this is its name now and it’s part of Grandvalira Resorts.

Two sectors joined through the air

The resort’s story comes down to three dates. In 1973 the first lift went up at Arinsal, the chair that now carries the name of its founder, Josep Serra. Almost ten years later the Pal ski area opened. And in 2001 a cable car joined the two between the Coll de la Botella and Port Negre, carrying more than 50 people at a time with views over the Port de Cabús. In 2022-23 it joined Grandvalira Resorts.

Today it has 63 km of groomed pistes between 1,550 and 2,560 m, 32 lifts and four winter access points. Pal has its runs among the trees. Arinsal has its services at Comallemple and connects straight down to Arinsal village. The resort calls itself Andorra’s most family-friendly option, and for its size and feel that seems fair to me.

Getting there without a parking battle

From Andorra la Vella, take the CG-3 to La Massana and then the CG-4 towards Pal or Arinsal. On the national buses, lines 5 and 6 reach La Massana and line 5 carries on to Arinsal. The best plan, though, is to stay up there. The La Massana gondola, in the middle of the village since 2004, has 16-seat cabins, climbs 675 m over a 2,250 m ride and drops you in the Pal sector. In Arinsal, the gondola has left from beside most of the hotels since 1997.

Driving, there’s free parking at each sector and a free Grandvalira Resorts Ski Bus. In a campervan, winter overnight stays are limited to marked areas, which here are Caubella and the Coll de la Botella at Pal and Comallemple at Arinsal. Flying in from the UK, the usual route is Toulouse or Barcelona and a coach to Andorra la Vella, then the local bus.

Is it good for children and beginners?

It’s home ground. Each sector, Pal and Arinsal, has its own ski school, and there’s a snow garden for 3 to 5-year-olds from €57 a day plus a lesson-free nursery from €61. Children’s group lessons for ages 6 to 11, over three to five days, start at €133, and courses begin on Mondays and Saturdays. Snowboarding is taught from age 12.

This season brings two new Fun Cross circuits, one on the Besurt run at Pal and one on the Pista Nova at Arinsal, with banked turns and small jumps, and the Explorers area by the Pal refuge adds four children’s snowshoe trails. Passes and season

Pal Arinsal’s lifts run 9am to 5pm from 4 December 2026, and the season ends on 4 April 2027. The season passes that work here are the Nord Pass, shared with Ordino Arcalís, and the Andorra Pass, which throws Grandvalira in too. The day pass price floats, and paying online knocks up to 15% off. With day passes, two days work at both northern resorts and four or more include a day at Grandvalira. Seniors aged 65 to 69 pay €29.50, well below Grandvalira’s rate, and afternoon passes start at €34.50. Every price and pass type is gathered in Andorra ski pass.

Beyond the pistes

The resort counts 22 places to eat and hosts events such as the ISMF Ski Mountaineering World Cup and the Comapedrosa Andorra race. In summer the slopes become a bike park with up to 60 km of trails, covered in mountain biking in Andorra. And to check the snow before you head up, Pal Arinsal publishes webcams for both sectors.

My take

Pal Arinsal lacks Grandvalira’s size and Ordino Arcalís’s off-piste, but it wins on something many families value more, simplicity. You stay in La Massana, come down for breakfast, ride the gondola and you’re back in the village by five. If you ski well and have a week, buy a multi-day Nord Pass and slip over to Arcalís for a day or two. If you’ll want some life in the evenings, Arinsal is the base.
