The airports nearest to Andorra, one by one

Ask for the nearest airport to Andorra and you’d expect one name. The honest answer has two, the nearest in kilometres and the nearest in practice, and they’re not the same place. Here are all the airports that appear in the official sources, with what actually links each one to Andorra, so you can pick on connections rather than on the map.

The closest, Andorra-La Seu

Andorra-La Seu d’Urgell Airport is in Montferrer, in Spain’s Lleida province, ten minutes’ drive from La Seu d’Urgell and twenty from the Andorran frontier, by its own reckoning. Nothing else on the list comes close on distance, not even Perpignan, which is 163 km from the capital. The two that work, Toulouse and Barcelona

Toulouse-Blagnac and Barcelona-El Prat are the only ones on the list with a direct coach to Andorra from the terminal and a published fare. Toulouse is 185 km from Andorra la Vella and Barcelona 208, according to Andorra Turisme. Andorra by Bus picks up in Toulouse arrivals four times a day for €36, and at El Prat both Andorra by Bus, €33 one way, and Andorra Direct Bus, from €35, stop at Terminals 1 and 2.

Reus, Girona, Perpignan, Carcassonne and Alguaire

Andorra Turisme lists these five within 200 km. None has an airport coach with a published fare that I could find, but they aren’t all equally awkward.

Reus is the best connected of the group, as the official guide lists a Reus to Andorra la Vella line run by La Hispano Igualadina, and Tarragona is 198 km from the Andorran capital. Perpignan, at 163 km, is the closest of all by road after La Seu and brings you in on the Pas de la Casa side. Girona is further, 271 km, and Andorra by Bus only advertises private transfers from the Costa Brava, as it does from Carcassonne and the Costa Daurada. Alguaire is Lleida’s airport, and Lleida is 185 km from Andorra la Vella, with a coach up from the railway station rather than the airport.

Landing in France

Flying into Toulouse, Perpignan or Carcassonne has a few knock-on effects. The French approach roads climb over high passes, which is serious mountain driving in winter, and you need chains or winter tyres from early November to the middle of May. On the way out, French customs apply to what you’ve bought, and the Foreign Office cautions that both neighbours come down hard on excess tobacco. Timing matters too, with only four coaches a day from Toulouse against one roughly every two hours from El Prat.

Heading for Pas de la Casa?

Pas de la Casa is Andorra’s French gateway, and that changes the order. If you’re skiing that sector of Grandvalira, Toulouse and Perpignan make more sense than Barcelona, since you cross straight into the resort without driving through the whole country. How I’d choose

First, is there a direct coach from the terminal? That rules in Toulouse and Barcelona and saves you a car, a taxi and any changes. Then compare fares from your local UK airport, including bags, since a ski bag can add a fair amount to a cheap seat. I’d only look at Reus, Girona or Perpignan if I were hiring a car anyway, because then distance is all that counts, and Perpignan and Toulouse win on that.

Whichever airport you pick, two things travel with you.
