The Barcelona to Andorra coach, operator by operator

If you’ve flown into El Prat and don’t need a car in Andorra, the coach is the obvious way up. Two operators run from both terminals, one calls at Diagonal and the other at Sants, and they all finish at the same bus station in Andorra la Vella. The differences are in where they stop, how you pay and a few discounts, so that’s what I’ve laid out here.

Andorra by Bus, the fixed fare

Andorra by Bus is the scheduled line run by Andbus. It leaves Terminal 1 every two hours from 06:45 to 22:45, plus a late one at 00:45. It calls at Terminal 2 fifteen minutes later and Diagonal after half an hour, then reaches Andorra 3 hours 15 minutes after leaving T1.

The fare is €33 one way and €56 return, and the company is clear that those prices apply to web bookings. You’ll also see €15 and €30 on the page, which is its A-PRIME subscription rate rather than a normal ticket. Coming back, coaches leave Andorra every two hours from 02:00 to 20:00 and reach Diagonal three hours later, which is useful if your flight home is in the evening. Inside Andorra it also runs a door-to-door service with more than 180 stops, handy if you’re staying out in the valleys.

Andorra Direct Bus, via Sants

Andorra Direct Bus lists sixteen daily runs linking El Prat, Sants and Andorra. The first leaves Sants at 6:15, the last at 23:45, and the timetable doesn’t change at weekends. From Sants it’s about three hours, from the airport about three and a half, because the coach starts at El Prat, picks up at Sants and then heads straight for the mountains. Its only stop in Andorra before the terminus is in Sant Julià de Lòria, outside E.Leclerc.

Singles start at €35. The discounts are the interesting bit for families, 80 % off for under-4s, 50 % for ages 4 to 12 and 10 % for 13 to 25, and there are shareable passes of 4, 10 and 20 trips. You pay by card online or in the app, or in cash at the ticket office, but never on board.

What about ALSA?

ALSA leaves from Barcelona Nord, the only one of the three that uses that station. Andorra’s national bus station shows ALSA leaving Nord on three different roads, one through the Cadí tunnel, one by Solsona and one by Ponts. I couldn’t find a published fare, so I haven’t ranked it on price. If Nord is closest to your hotel, check its website before ruling it out.

Which coach suits which traveller?

Landing at El Prat, I wouldn’t overthink it. Look at which coach leaves your terminal next and book that one on your phone while you wait for your bags. Staying a night in Barcelona first changes things, because then it comes down to which is nearer your hotel, Diagonal or Sants. And if you’re travelling with young children, do the maths with the Direct Bus discounts before paying anyone full price, since half fare for a 4 to 12-year-old adds up quickly over a return trip.

For a late arrival, the 00:45 from Terminal 1 gets you to Andorra at 04:00. It works, but I’d only take it if the alternative is a night at an airport hotel.

Luggage, skis and the border

With Direct Bus each passenger can put two suitcases in the hold and bring a cabin bag weighing up to 10 kg. Skis and bikes count as special luggage, carried on request and when there’s space, so mention them when you book. Pets can only travel in the hold in a suitable carrier with their papers, although guide dogs ride with their owners. More on that in Andorra with a dog.

The coach crosses a real customs post, since Andorra isn’t in Schengen, so keep your passport handy. On the way back into Spain, officers can check what’s in the hold against the duty free allowances.

Once you’re in Andorra la Vella

All of them finish at the Estació Nacional d’Autobusos in the capital, which has its own page at Andorra la Vella bus station.
