Ordino Arcalís, Andorra's northern ski area

Ordino Arcalís is Andorra’s small resort, and to my mind its most interesting one. It sits at the head of the Ordino valley, faces north and has a reputation out of all proportion to its 30.5 km. It’s Andorra’s off-piste resort and, surprisingly, a very good resort for children too.

A resort built by the locals

Ordino Arcalís was created in 1983 by the residents of the parish. In 2018 it joined the Grandvalira brand, which is how Grandvalira Resorts was born, and Pal Arinsal came on board in 2022-23. Today it has 442 hectares, 30.5 km of pistes between 1,940 and 2,625 m, 16 lifts including a 2019 Doppelmayr gondola, and 101 snow cannons.

The resort itself stresses its north-facing slopes and describes itself as probably the Pyrenean resort with the best chance of an early opening and the longest season. I can’t confirm that with snow records, but the aspect is a genuine argument for spring weeks.

Why do freeriders choose it?

Because off-piste is the main course here. Ordino Arcalís counts 21 freeride zones and 120 routes at three levels of difficulty, 3.4 km of them marked, plus a specialist school. The Freeride World Tour has been coming here since 2015, and from 1 to 6 February 2026 it staged the first FIS Freeride World Championships, with 67 riders across the four categories. The tour’s organisers, quoted by the resort, single out the sheer number of lines and the consistently good snow, and the resort says that is why it has become one of the tour’s favourite stops.

It’s worth remembering what Andorran law says plainly, that anyone who leaves the pistes does so on their own responsibility. If you lack experience or avalanche kit, I’d start with a freeride lesson, and your travel insurance must cover off-piste. I go into it in freeride in Andorra.

Good for children too

The last thing you’d expect at a freeride resort is the Megaverda, which Ordino Arcalís calls the longest green run in the Pyrenees. These days the whole 8.5 km has been turned into a Kids Forest trail with characters and challenges, and Planells has a second Kids Forest. Toddlers who can walk go to the nursery (1 to 3 years, from €43.95), slightly older children to the snow garden (3 to 6, from €62.10), and the Club Màgic Ski takes anyone from 3 to 16. Getting there and parking

You drive up the CG-3 from Ordino, and La Seu d’Urgell is almost 40 km away. The car park, with 1,500 spaces and direct access to the slopes, is free, and there’s VIP parking at €10 a day plus electric chargers at Planells and L’Hortell. A free bus leaves Ordino at 08:30, 08:50, 09:30 and 10:30 and comes down at 15:00, 16:00, 16:30 and 17:00, though the resort warns that times vary. Passes, guarantee and season

Ordino Arcalís is open for 2026-27 between 4 December and 4 April, 9am to 5pm. You ski it on the Nord Pass, which also covers Pal Arinsal, or on the Andorra Pass. Day passes are dynamic with up to 15% off online, the 65 to 69 senior pass costs €29.50, and the foot passenger pass includes a return ride on the Tristaina gondola.

What sets Arcalís apart is its weather guarantee, included on every day and multi-day pass. If the wind or the snow doesn’t convince you after one lift, you swap your pass for another day at the Ordino Arcalís ticket office, on the same day.

My take

For an experienced freerider, there’s nowhere better in Andorra. For a family, the Megaverda and the calm atmosphere make up for its size. For anyone chasing mileage or nightlife, it’s too small, and I’d treat it as a day out from La Massana or Ordino on a Nord Pass. On a clear day, save some time for the Tristaina solar viewpoint, a gondola and a chairlift away from the base.
