Canillo Tibetan bridge, 603 m slung across the Vall del Riu

The first thing to know about the Canillo Tibetan bridge isn’t its length, it’s how you get there. Plenty of people drive up the Montaup road expecting to park nearby and find they can’t. The only way in is the official bus, and you need your ticket before you board.

A 603 m bridge, but how scary is it?

It’s 603 m long and one metre wide, or 1.7 m if you measure between the handrails. It spans the Vall del Riu at 1,875 m on the l’Armiana side and 1,884 m on the coll de Cauba side, and at its highest point it’s 158 m off the ground. The official site calls it one of the longest in the world. I wouldn’t get into league tables, because with numbers like those it doesn’t need them.

What gets people, in my view, is that you go out and back on the same deck. Traffic runs both ways, so you pass people coming back, sometimes on the highest stretch. When it’s quiet it’s a glorious walk; when it’s busy it’s a queue with a view.

Getting there, step by step

You buy your ticket at ponttibetacanillo.com or at Canillo tourist office, pick a time slot and catch the bus in the village 30 minutes beforehand. It climbs the Montaup road, also stops at the car park for the Roc del Quer viewpoint, and drops you at Montaup. From there it’s 900 m on foot along a path with views over the central valley of the parish and the Grandvalira pistes.

The site warns that parts of the path run past unfenced drops, so I’d wear proper walking shoes even though it’s short. There are no tickets and no wifi at the top. Arrive without a ticket and you won’t be crossing.

Ticket prices and opening times

An adult ticket is €17 and €14 up to age 12, with the return bus included. From 18 July to 13 September that goes up to €19 and €16. Under-5s are free. Residents and Carnet Jove holders pay €14, but only at the tourist office.

The combo with the viewpoint is the smart buy, as I see it. For €20 (€22 in high summer) the bus takes you to the bridge, then the viewpoint, then back to Canillo. In autumn 2026 the bridge opens 10:00 to 16:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 19:00 at weekends. With shorter days I’d go for the first slot.

How much time do you need?

Do the maths before picking a slot. You need to be at the Canillo stop 30 minutes before your entry time. From the bus it’s 900 m on foot to the bridge, you cross all 603 m and come back the same way, so all told you walk about 3 km. With the viewpoint combo, add the stop at the Roc del Quer. I’d set aside the whole morning and not book anything with a fixed time straight afterwards.

Rules worth reading first

The bridge is pedestrian only and children must be with an adult. Pushchairs, wheelchairs, bikes and animals are all banned, so if you’ve driven down from the UK with the dog, this one’s off the list. You can’t sit on the deck or throw anything off it either. The site itself asks anyone with vertigo, dizziness or a fear of heights not to cross, which strikes me as honest advice.

One more point for British visitors. With Andorra outside the EU, the GHIC won’t help you here, so sort out travel insurance before any mountain outing, however gentle.

Night crossings, the big jump and alternatives

On Thursdays and Saturdays in July and August there’s a night visit. The bus leaves at 20:30 and returns at 22:45, with a grilled botifarra sausage and a drink at the Bar de l’Armiana, for €45 (€35 up to 12). It’s pricey next to the daytime ticket, but crossing in the dark changes the whole feel of the thing.
