Andorra for couples, well away from the shops

Duty-free bargains and ski lifts don’t exactly scream romance, and that’s Andorra’s reputation. Yet for two people it works beautifully once you slow it down. There’s thermal water, mountain restaurants that stay open after dark, a Starlight-certified sky over La Massana and places where the overnight stay is the whole point. Here’s how I’d put a couple’s break together.

Hot water, no children

Given a single free afternoon, I’d spend it at Inúu, the grown-ups-only side of Caldea in Escaldes-Engordany. The whole complex draws on the Roc del Metge spring, but for real quiet this is the part you want. Even the Premium pass for the rest of the centre is limited to over-16s.

My tip is to stay in upper Escaldes and leave the car parked all afternoon. Out of the water, a stroll back to the room, change, and down to dinner is exactly the rhythm a break for two needs. Practical details are on the Inúu page.

The night that makes the trip

If you’re going to splash out, this is how I’d do it. Up in the Grau Roig ski area, Grandvalira has a geodesic dome called the Domo Coma III, sleeping two to four at 2,500 metres, warmed by a pellet stove and fitted with a kitchen and shower. Your stay covers a welcome drink with local produce, dinner and breakfast, all brought to the dome, and a romantic package can be added for a fee. Andorra Turisme groups it with the resort’s other cabins, branded by Serras Collection, and alongside it suggests two mountain bordas, the Pi in the Montaup valley and the Ovella Negra up at Incles.

The official site even lists the staffed mountain huts, with showers, sheets and simple meals, as an idea for couples. If you both love hiking, that’s a lovely thought. For top-end hotels, carry on to luxury hotels in Andorra.

What can couples do in the evening?

In the snow season, I’d pick between two things. The first is dinner on the mountain. A handful of Grandvalira’s restaurants carry on after the lifts close, some with a snowmobile or snowcat ride up, and the resort markets them to couples. The menus range from traditional cooking to the Vodka Bar, where Michelin-starred chef Nandu Jubany has come on board.

The second is the night sky. La Massana holds Starlight status and in winter runs two outings. One lasts two hours, on snowshoes with guided stargazing from the Coll de la Botella. The other takes three and a half, snowshoeing down to the Bordes del Cardemeller for a tasting of local produce and riding back by snowmobile. Summer, set an alarm

The quirkiest summer date is with the sun itself. High in Ordino Arcalís, at 2,701 metres, sits the Tristaina solar viewpoint, and on a single morning each year, 7 August, at exactly 7:37, the sun peeps for about three minutes through a natural window in Arcalís peak. For something with no alarm clock, head up to Engolasters, the easiest of Andorra’s lakes to reach, 7 hectares ringed by pines above Escaldes. Swimming isn’t allowed, but the loop around it is one of the country’s gentlest walks. Through the height of summer, six Romanesque churches throw their doors open for Romànic de bat a bat, literally “wide open Romanesque”, a calm way to fill a morning and a good excuse to see the countryside between them.

Wine, a market and a concert

If you enjoy wine, the wineries named by Andorra Turisme and the parish council sit in the lowest-lying parish, Sant Julià de Lòria. They’re Casa Auvinyà, Casa Beal, Casa Sabaté and Mas Berenguer, the last in Fontaneda. In the capital, the Mercat de la Vall takes over the old town one Saturday a month, always the first, from May to October.
