Grau Roig, high-mountain skiing with no houses around it

Grau Roig turns up on every Andorra ski search, and people often assume it’s a resort village like Soldeu. It isn’t. It’s a Grandvalira sector with a car park, a hotel, restaurants and lifts, sitting in open high mountains, and that’s exactly why I rate it as one of the most pleasant corners of the ski area.

A ski sector without a village

Grau Roig lies in Encamp parish, at the foot of the Envalira pass on the Andorran side and next to the exit of the tunnel. Grandvalira describes it as the only sector of the resort with no residential village, and the parish council doesn’t count it among its six settlements either. It’s a place with services rather than a place where people live.

You notice the upside as soon as you arrive. According to Grandvalira, you can practically ski away from the sector’s car park, and parking at Cubil costs nothing. For families with small children, or anyone driving in for the day, that removes the access-lift queues you get elsewhere.

Check the sky before you set off. Andorra’s weather service has a station at Grau Roig at 2,152 m and Grandvalira streams a webcam of the sector, so there’s no need to guess whether fog has settled on the pass. At this height, a grey morning in the capital can mean a blizzard up here.

What’s the skiing like at Grau Roig?

There are runs for every level and, for younger skiers, Kids Forest, one of the themed children’s trails of Grandvalira. You’ll also find freeride zones, three marked ski-touring circuits and the Sunrise Park Xavi, a beginners’ snowpark. The sector tops out at 2,550 m and connects on the slopes with Pas de la Casa and the rest of the ski area.

Its sporting oddity is the Riberal run. Grandvalira bills it as the only approved speed-skiing run in the Iberian peninsula and a permanent World Cup venue for the discipline. It’s not one for the average holiday skier, but worth watching on a race day.

If you’re travelling with children aged 1 to 3, this is your sector. The Grau Roig crèche is the only one in Grandvalira, starting at €92.50 and sold online only. I go through the options in family skiing in Andorra.

Snow activities beyond skiing

Grau Roig is one of the resort’s activity hubs. Grandvalira runs snowmobile trips here (half an hour from €85 per machine, with night rides from 18:00), husky sledding from €56 for 2 km and two-hour guided snowshoe walks for €39 with no lift pass needed. For non-skiers, I’d spend the money on snowshoeing. The snowmobile is fun, but for the cost of one half-hour ride you get two snowshoe outings and see far more of the mountain.

Once the snow melts, Grau Roig becomes a trailhead. From the Cubil car park, Andorra Tourism describes the route to the Pessons lakes, 5.95 km with 707 m of climbing and graded hard, via the first lake and its restaurant and then along the GR7 to the Pessons col. The council also lists a picnic area at 2,080 m, 200 m from the car park, with access to the Bony d’Envalira via ferrata and the Ruta dels Orris.

Andorra Tourism keeps its high-route season to the months from late June to late September, and that’s sound advice. The weather turns fast at this altitude.

Getting there and where to stay

By car, take the CG-2 towards the Envalira pass or use the tunnel, which comes out close to the sector entrance. By bus, national line L4 between Andorra la Vella and Pas de la Casa stops at Grau Roig. Coming from Toulouse on the N-22, Grandvalira points out that the Envalira tunnel leaves you close to the Grau Roig turn-off, so you skip the climb over the top.
