The Funicamp, Encamp's cable car up to Grandvalira

The Funicamp is the reason plenty of skiers sleep in Encamp even though they’re skiing Grandvalira. I think it’s the cleverest piece of infrastructure in the parish, because it turns a valley village ten minutes from the capital into a ski base without anyone having to live at 2,000 metres.

What is the Funicamp?

It’s a 6 km funitel linking Encamp village with Solanelles, where the pistes begin. Grandvalira bills it as one of the longest funitels in Europe and puts the journey at about 25 minutes, passing high over the Cortals valley. At the top you’re above 2,500 m, with what the resort calls one of the best panoramic views of the whole ski area.

Halfway up there’s a mid-station in Els Cortals d’Encamp. In summer it’s the start of lake walks, mountain-bike trails, the Clots de l’Aspra via ferrata and the little suspension bridge.

The Funicamp in winter

In season it serves the Encamp sector of Grandvalira, which the resort describes as its first access point from Spain and the closest to Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. Grandvalira’s 2026-27 season is scheduled from 4 December to 4 April. Your normal lift pass gets you up, and foot passengers ride on the pedestrian pass. The building has self-service machines for collecting passes and, around it, sports shops selling and renting kit.

At Solanelles, the top station building has two places to eat, a self-service café downstairs and, two floors up, El Racó de Solanelles, an à la carte restaurant known for Argentine-style grilled meat. Non-skiers who want to go up on snowshoes or touring skis can buy the Mountain Pass, a season ticket just for the resort’s ski-touring and snowshoe circuits that includes one Funicamp ride up and down a day; for 2026-27 it’s advertised from €182 for the season or from €20 a day. Parking and getting there

This is where the system shines. If you ski on a day pass, the four council car parks (Prat de l’Areny, Arínsols, Coma Llarga and Prat de Baró) cost nothing between 8:00 and 23:59, and the Funibus runs you to the lift. If you’d rather park at the base, the Funicamp has a 500-space covered car park and an outdoor one, both charged by the day. All the national options are in parking in Andorra.

Guests staying anywhere in the parish get the council’s free Funibus, running every 20 minutes between 8:30 and 18:00. From Andorra la Vella, national bus L2 reaches Encamp, and by car it’s about 10 minutes on the CG-2. The Funicamp tourist office is at Avinguda de François Mitterrand 87.

Flying in from the UK without a hire car, the chain is straightforward. Coaches from Barcelona airport and Toulouse run to Andorra la Vella, with Andorra by Bus charging €33 and €36 one way on its website in September 2026, and from the capital the L2 takes you on to Encamp and the lift. No hire car, no snow chains and no mountain driving on your part.

Is the Funicamp worth it in summer?

The 2026 summer service started on 11 July and ended on 8 September, running 10:00 to 16:00, with the last ride up at 15:00, and it was free on 8 September for Andorra’s national day. A return cost €16, up only €11, and the combined ticket with the 4x4 bus to the Orri del Cubil €22. Under-fives travelled free, clean dogs were welcome and bikes needed the separate Bike pass.

My answer is yes, if you go up with a plan. The 4x4 bus runs from Solanelles to Cubil lake, next to an orri, an old stone shepherds’ hut, with departures every 30 minutes. Grandvalira also offered catch-and-release fishing for children aged 6 to 14 on high lakes and the guided via ferrata for €52. And at the top station stands Petjades enlairades, Naiara Galdós’s sculpture inspired by the Encamp she-bear.

Where to stay to use it

The logic is simple. The closer you are to the Funicamp or a Funibus stop, the less you depend on the car. I compare the options in hotels in Encamp.
