It's charged per person per night from age 16, for up to seven nights, at €1 to €3 depending on the category, plus 4.5% IGI. Add it before comparing rates.
Airport coaches end at the bus station in Andorra la Vella, where every national bus line starts. If you're not hiring a car, that makes the capital the easiest first base.
The UK government notes that hotels and tourist apartments must register the names of all overnight guests with the police, so have passports to hand at check-in.
My scores rate how well each area handles a typical four or five-night trip, weighing slope or sight access, buses, services and quiet. It's my opinion, not an official ranking, and it shifts between winter and summer.

Andorra is small, 468 square kilometres, but picking the wrong base shows up fast. The country is a set of mountain valleys joined by winding roads, and in winter the wrong choice means driving every morning, fitting chains on a pass and fighting for a parking space. So rather than recommend hotels, I’ll talk about areas, because that’s what actually shapes the trip.
Start with what you’re coming for
Andorra Turisme counts more than 300 hotels and says they’re open all year. There’s no shortage of rooms. The hard part is choosing a valley, and I split it into three kinds of trip.
A ski trip, between 4 December 2026 and 4 April 2027, means sleeping next to a lift. A shopping, Caldea and town trip means Andorra la Vella or Escaldes-Engordany, which in practice are one continuous town. A summer trip of walks and lakes works from almost anywhere, although I’d head for the quiet valleys in the north.
The areas, one by one
The eastern valley is Grandvalira country, with 215 km of pistes. Encamp is the first gateway coming from Spain and goes up by the Funicamp. Canillo has a gondola from the village centre and a sector built around families. El Tarter and Soldeu are the proper ski villages, with the smartest hotels at the foot of the slopes. At the far end, beyond the Envalira pass, is Pas de la Casa, right on the French border and the first place you’ll reach if you drive in from Toulouse.
The northern valley has a different feel. La Massana is a sizeable village with a gondola up to Pal Arinsal, and Arinsal sits at the foot of its own sector and of the Comapedrosa. Further up, Ordino is the least populated parish and the calmest, with Ordino Arcalís at the head of the valley.
In the centre and south are Andorra la Vella, the capital, Escaldes-Engordany and Sant Julià de Lòria, which is the first parish you meet coming up from La Seu d’Urgell.
Does winter or summer change the answer?
Very much so. What’s perfect in January can be the wrong call in July. Soldeu and Pas de la Casa revolve around the ski area, and in summer they wouldn’t be my first choice. Then I’d swap the resort for a village with footpaths from the door, such as Ordino, Canillo or Arinsal, or for the capital if you’d like to take the bus somewhere different each day.
Grandvalira says demand peaks from December to March. That’s when I’d book furthest ahead, especially in the ski-in villages, which fill first. If you’re coming for February half-term, don’t leave it late. In summer there’s room almost everywhere.
No car? Here’s what works
Coaches from Toulouse and Barcelona airports pull into the bus station in Andorra la Vella. From there, local buses fan out to every valley, and even the longest ride costs no more than €4.80. Without a car I’d stay in the capital, or right beside a stop on the route you’ll use every day, and choose the hotel by the bus stop rather than the view.
Skiing without a car is another matter. Grandvalira runs a free Ski Bus between sectors and Pal Arinsal has a free bus from La Massana, but hauling skis onto a local bus every day of a week soon gets old. If you’re skiing without a car, stay where the lift is and forget about it.
The extras on top of the room
The tourist tax has applied since 1 July 2022 in every regulated property. Per person and night, five-star hotels charge €3, four-stars and holiday lets €2, two and three-stars €1.50 and everything else €1, charged for guests aged 16 or over, capped at seven nights, and topped up with 4.5% IGI. For four adults in a four-star, that’s €8 plus tax every night. The full rules are in Andorra’s tourist tax.
Health cover is the other extra Brits forget. According to the UK government, neither the GHIC nor the EHIC covers you here, so travel insurance with medical and mountain rescue cover belongs in the budget alongside the hotel.
