Sant Cristòfol d'Anyós, La Massana's Romanesque viewpoint

Some churches are about their interiors. Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós is about its setting. From below it looks like a chapel clinging to the hillside, and once you’re up there you understand why it was built on that spot. The whole lower valley is spread out beneath you.

A 12th-century church that kept growing

museus.ad says the original 12th-century church was small and was enlarged in the 16th century. Andorra Turisme adds that it keeps part of its original Romanesque structure and went through several enlargements and alterations up to the 19th century. It shows in the building, which doesn’t have the unity of a textbook Romanesque church but that of a village church reshaped over time to suit its parishioners.

Andorra Turisme lists it among the cultural highlights of La Massana, and places it at the top of Anyós, above 1,300 m.

What can you see from the hill?

According to Andorra Turisme, from its site you can see the approach to the valley from Escaldes-Engordany, the villages of Sispony and La Massana, and even Ordino. For me it’s the best viewpoint over the lower parish that you can reach without walking, and the main reason to come, more than the interior.

museus.ad adds a detail that says it all, it’s one of the country’s favourite churches for weddings. With a setting like this, I’m not surprised.

What’s left inside

Here it’s worth adjusting expectations. The interior was once decorated with Romanesque wall paintings that were lost in the 20th century, so you won’t see the painted Romanesque of some other churches. What remains is a Gothic Last Supper, surrounded by 16th-century paintings showing St Michael weighing souls and St Christopher, with scenes from his life and miracles. The Comú’s tourism website also credits a 16th-century altarpiece to Joan de Monterde.

It isn’t a spectacular ensemble, but it hangs together, and it tells the story of a saint who carries particular weight here.

10 July, the blessing of the cars

St Christopher is the patron saint of motorists, and museus.ad notes that every 10 July the church hosts the blessing of vehicles, a festival declared of cultural interest. If your dates line up, it’s the most unusual way to see the church in use, with a tradition you won’t find in any other parish. Timing works in your favour too. July is also when the tourist board’s summer Romanesque programme, Romànic de bat a bat, opens Sant Climent de Pal and five other churches around the country with guided visits, so a trip around 10 July lets you see both of La Massana’s Romanesque highlights properly.

La Massana’s Romanesque in a single morning

Sant Cristòfol isn’t alone. The parish has other churches of Romanesque origin listed by Andorra Turisme, and it helps to know what each offers before you share out your time. Sant Climent de Pal is the oldest, with the unique bell tower. Sant Antoni de la Grella, at the entrance to La Massana, is built against the mountainside, was restored in the 1940s and is, with Meritxell and Canòlich, one of the country’s three main sanctuaries. Sant Andreu del Prat del Campanar, north of Arinsal, is small and had to be rebuilt after two avalanches. And Sant Iscle i Santa Victòria, the parish church, keeps nothing Romanesque.

With that map, I’d do Sant Climent first and Sant Cristòfol second, leaving the Grella for anyone strolling down the old royal road.

Opening times, access and what to pair it with

museus.ad publishes no fixed hours or price and points you to the parish tourist office in Plaça de les Fontetes, +376 835 693, and to the parish priest, +376 806 111. Access isn’t adapted for reduced mobility. You drive up the CS-310 from the CG-3; by bus, take the L5 or L6 to La Massana and the parish M3 to Anyós. By bike, Andorra Turisme’s route 9 passes it on the way to the Beixalís col.

I’d pair it with Sant Climent de Pal the same morning. Both are in the same parish and complement each other, one for its tower and the other for its setting. The rest are in Romanesque churches in Andorra.
