When to go to Andorra, depending on what you want

The question of when to go to Andorra is a trick one, because the country changes completely between winter and summer. In January it’s a ski resort with shops, in August a mountain landscape of lakes and trails with shops. The best time depends on why you’re going, and from there it pays to check the official calendar so you don’t arrive on the day everything shuts.

If you’re going skiing

Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, the three downhill resorts, plan to run their 2026-27 season from early December, on the 4th, to 4 April 2027, snow permitting, and Naturland’s cross-country trails open earlier, on 28 November. The heaviest snowfalls, according to the tourist board, come between December and February.

Within that window I have two favourite spells. Midweek in January, once the New Year rush is over, and the first half of March, with longer days and the World Cup in Soldeu on 6 and 7 March. The ones I’d avoid if I could are Christmas and February, and that’s not just a hunch. Grandvalira drops its group discount between 25 December and 6 January, and again between 30 January and 28 February, a clear sign of when demand peaks. For British families that’s awkward, because February half-term falls right in the middle, so if school holidays tie you to it, book early. If you’re going for the mountains

The high-mountain window is short. The tourist board recommends the Madriu valley’s routes above 1,700 metres from late June to late September, and snow doesn’t leave the summits until early June. That’s also when the summer attractions open, such as the electric train up the Incles valley, from mid-June to early September, or Naturland’s summer season, which in 2026 lasted from 27 June until 6 September.

July and August are the fullest months, with festes majors in every parish and Romànic de bat a bat, when churches open their doors, but also the busiest. If I could only go once, I’d pick the second half of September. It’s all covered in Andorra in summer and Andorra in autumn.

If you’re going for shopping or Caldea

Almost any time works. Shops close at 8pm, or 9pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and only four days a year see them all shut, New Year’s Day, 14 March, 8 September and Christmas Day. On 14 March they open if it falls at a weekend, and in 2027 it’s a Sunday. If you’re travelling over a holiday, check Andorra’s public holidays first, because on 8 September, Meritxell Day, every shop closes.

For a shopping and thermal-spa break, I think the shoulder seasons are best. Between the lifts closing and summer, and in October and November, you miss both the skiers and August’s hikers. What Andorra is like then is in Andorra in spring.

UK school holidays and Spanish long weekends

Spain’s calendar matters in Andorra as much as British half-terms do. The Spanish long weekend in early December is the first big weekend of winter, to the point that Naturland opens its 1600 level from 5 to 8 December as if it were a holiday. Easter comes at the end of March in 2027, still inside the ski season, which closes on 4 April, so an Easter ski trip works this time. October also has its own events, such as Andorra la Vella’s Fira d’Andorra, held on 23-25 October 2026, where season passes go on sale, and the Andorra Trail race, based in Escaldes-Engordany, on 9-11 October.

The weather in two lines

On the valley floor, the normal mean temperature runs from 3.1°C in January to 19.4°C in July, with September still at 15.2°C. Summer and autumn are the wettest seasons, and the sun shines on more than three hundred days. Up high it’s considerably colder, especially at the ski resorts. What doesn’t change all year

Three things apply whenever you go. The tourist tax, between €1 and €3 a night per person depending on the accommodation, is charged year-round. Winter equipment, chains or winter tyres, is compulsory between 1 November and 15 May. And because the GHIC doesn’t cover Andorra, travel and medical insurance is essential in any season.
