Canòlich Sanctuary, the mountain a whole parish climbs

There’s one thing worth knowing before you drive up to Canòlich. The image that gives the place its meaning isn’t here any more. The Romanesque statue of Our Lady of Canòlich, patron of Sant Julià de Lòria, is kept in the town church, and the sanctuary is above all the spot the parish walks to once a year. Once you know that, the visit changes, and I think it improves.

A sanctuary in the mountains

The sanctuary stands at 1,635 m beside the CS-600, the road that climbs from Bixessarri to the Coll de la Gallina. Andorra Turisme notes that its lofty, hard-to-reach position is exactly what allowed pilgrims to show their devotion by climbing up. There are two picnic areas nearby, and the Comú also signposts it as a viewpoint over the valley.

How old is it?

The building you see is 20th-century, but the site is far older. Andorra Turisme cites medieval records from 1176, and the government museums portal explains that the present church, remodelled in the 1970s, was raised on a medieval structure that had already been altered in the 17th century and again in the 19th and early 20th.

One detail sums up its importance for me. The Manual Digest of 1745, the compilation of Andorra’s history and customs written by Antoni Fiter i Rossell, names Our Lady of Canòlich as one of the three principal sanctuaries of the valleys, alongside Meritxell in Canillo and Sant Antoni de la Grella in La Massana. If you already know Meritxell Sanctuary, this plays the same role on a parish scale.

What to see inside

The sanctuary keeps an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece and ceramic murals by the artist Sergi Mas, which are what draw the eye. The statue of the Virgin, 12th-century and crowned by the Vatican in 1999, is in the church of Sant Julià i Sant Germà, where since 2019 she has her own chapel as part of the remodelled sanctuary. I’d do both visits on the same day.

Opening times, price and guided visits

It costs nothing to go in. For a guided visit you’ll need to come between mid-July and mid-September and book 15 days ahead with the parish tourist office. In summer 2026 the sanctuary opened from 30 June to 29 August, Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm. For the rest of the year the museums portal refers you to the tourist office on (+376) 744 045. On accessibility, Andorra Turisme says it’s adapted and museus.ad says it isn’t, so check before you go if you have reduced mobility.

The pilgrimage on the last Saturday in May

The Canòlich gathering is the biggest religious event in the parish. On the last Saturday in May, locals and visitors walk up, there’s Mass, the blessing of bread and sardana dancing, and Andorra Turisme stresses the spirit of sharing among the pilgrims. A free shuttle runs that day. If you can choose your dates, that’s when I’d go.

Walking up

The Canòlich footpath starts on the Aixovall road, the CG-6, at kilometre 0.7, in front of a large water tank at 930 m. It passes the Font dels Meners spring and the Collet Martí hut, which has water, and finishes across the sunny slope. It’s 3.7 km with 645 m of ascent, graded hard, but it faces north and is well shaded, so it’s manageable in summer. The start is covered in Aixovall. By car, the natural route is through Bixessarri.

The footpath is part of Sant Julià Màgica, the Comú’s family tourism project, which uses two waymarked routes to tell the legends of the White Lady of Aubinyà and of Our Lady of Canòlich. The Senyoreta path is the one designed for children; this is the demanding one. My practical tip is to leave a car at the top beside the sanctuary and come down by road, which is exactly what the official listing suggests, because going back down the same steep path is hard on the knees. If there are two of you driving, it’s an easy shuttle to arrange from Bixessarri, and you’ll have the whole descent to enjoy the view of the Os valley opening up below you.
