Andorra's viewpoints, from a glass walkway to a sundial at 2,701 m

In a country that’s almost all mountain, a viewpoint shouldn’t be news. Yet Andorra has made them something of a speciality, with two that are attractions in their own right and a network of roadside balconies designed to be enjoyed without really leaving the car. Here are the ones I’d put on the list, in order of what they give you.

Two viewpoints that are outings in themselves

The best known is the Roc del Quer viewpoint in Canillo. It’s a 20 m walkway, 8 m anchored on the rock and 12 m projecting over the valley, much of it with a glass floor and a sculpture of a seated thinker at the end. It looks out over Montaup, the Valira d’Orient valley and the Grandvalira slopes. A ticket costs €6, and you can only get there by car along the Montaup road; the Tibetan bridge bus is no use if you’re visiting the viewpoint alone.

The other is at Ordino Arcalís and it’s my favourite. The Tristaina solar viewpoint is a giant sundial on the Peyreguils peak, 2,701 m up and a few metres from the French border, with a 25 m ring and a 27 m mast tilted at 42.55°. Since opening in summer 2021 it has passed 520,000 visitors, according to Ordino Arcalís. You walk up from La Coma d’Arcalís, 2.4 km and 1 hr 30, or take the Creussans chairlift in summer.

Which viewpoints can you see from the car?

Andorra Turisme runs a network of roadside viewpoints with panels on plants and wildlife and, at many, Braille, raised reliefs and QR codes, plus a layout designed for people with reduced mobility. They’re free and have parking.

These are the ones I’d stop at. The Port d’Envalira, above 2,400 m at km 27 of the CG-2, on what Andorra Turisme calls the highest road pass in the Pyrenees. The Coll d’Ordino, at 1,980 m, with an orientation table and views over the Orient valley. The Coll de la Botella, above 2,000 m over Pal at km 13.3 of the CG-4, beside the sculpture Tempesta en una tassa de te. And the Roca de la Sabina, at 1,896 m above Arinsal, where you can still see the path of the 1996 avalanche.

Viewpoints above Andorra la Vella

The capital offers two ways to see it from above. The quick one is La Comella, at 1,319 m, about 3 km from the centre along the CS-101 and right by the road. From there you see the city at 1,023 m, with the Pic de Carroi, the Pic de les Fonts and the Pic del Pla de l’Estany, close to 2,860 m, behind it. Around you is downy oak woodland, and with luck a red squirrel or a great spotted woodpecker.

The slow one, and to my mind the best in summer, is the Andorra la Vella viewpoints walk. It’s 9 km with 640 m of climbing through the shady north-facing woods, from the car park of the Serradells sports centre, linking four lookouts with orientation tables, the Roc de Sendes, the Bosc Negre, the Roc de Palomera at 1,660 m and the Roc de Solobre. Between the second and third it crosses a lovely hazel wood.

Viewpoints beside Romanesque churches

There’s another category I’m fond of, the lookouts next to Romanesque chapels. The one at Sant Romà dels Vilars, at 1,131 m above Escaldes-Engordany, faces south over the capital and the Madriu. Sant Jaume d’Engordany, at 1,100 m, is similar and more urban. And Sant Cristòfol d’Anyós in La Massana features among the walk-in viewpoints Andorra Turisme highlights. In Sant Julià, the council has signposted six more with panels, including Canòlich and Sant Serni de Nagol.

When and how I’d visit them

The high ones have dates. Access to the solar viewpoint stays open until 1 November 2026, according to Ordino Arcalís, and in winter you can only go up on a guided snowshoe outing or on touring skis. Since 28 September the Roc del Quer opens 9:30 to 18:00 on weekdays and until 19:00 at weekends; winter hours haven’t been published yet.

My advice is to go early in the morning or as the sun drops, when the light comes in low and the valley has depth. And if you pair the Roc del Quer with the Canillo Tibetan bridge, the combined ticket costs €20, though I’d only buy it if the bridge really appeals.
