Hotels in Encamp, between the capital and the slopes

Plenty of people drive through Encamp on the way to Soldeu without stopping, and I think they’re missing a trick. It sits halfway between everything, about 10 minutes from the capital along the CG-2 according to Grandvalira, with a cable car that drops you on the slopes without touching the car.

The Funicamp, your way into Grandvalira

Grandvalira describes the Encamp sector as the first entrance to its ski area from Spain and the nearest one to the capital and Escaldes. You ride up on the Funicamp, a 6 km cable car linking the village with Solanelles, where the pistes start and where the resort promises one of the best views in the ski area. At the top there’s a self-service restaurant on the ground floor and the à la carte Racó de Solanelles on the second.

What really makes Encamp work is what happens at the bottom. If you’re staying in the parish, the council runs the free Funibus to the Funicamp from 8:30 to 18:00, every 20 minutes. And if you drive, a Grandvalira lift pass for the day lets you park free from 8:00 to 23:59 in any of the council’s four car parks (Prat de Baró, Coma Llarga, Arínsols or Prat de l’Areny). Who should stay in Encamp?

Skiers with a car who’d rather not pay for location. Anyone mixing skiing with shopping or Caldea, both a short drive away. And summer walkers, since Grandvalira calls Encamp an excellent base for mountain outings.

It’s not the right pick if you want to ski out of the hotel door or you’re after resort nightlife. That’s what hotels in Soldeu or Pas de la Casa are for. Encamp is a valley town, with 13,751 residents on 31 August 2026, at 1,250 m according to its council.

Two worlds in one parish

Encamp has six official settlements, Encamp, Vila, Les Bons, La Mosquera, El Tremat and Pas de la Casa, and covers about 82 km², almost 18% of the country. The quirk is that the main village and Pas de la Casa are 25 km apart, with the Envalira pass in between. When a booking site says Encamp, check the address is in the village and not in Pas de la Casa, because they’re two very different holidays. Grau Roig, with its hotel right in the ski area, isn’t a settlement either, but a ski sector with no residents.

Without a car, there’s plenty in the village. The centre has Casa Cristo, a folk museum in a house lived in until 1947, the National Car Museum, with around 80 cars, 60 motorbikes and about a hundred bicycles, and the Sacred Art Museum. A short walk away is the historic hamlet of Les Bons, with Sant Romà and its tower, while Santa Eulàlia in the village keeps its 23 m Lombard bell tower. For a white-out day, that’s a plan Soldeu can’t offer, and all three are in the village centre.

Encamp in summer

In summer the Funicamp runs from 11 July to 8 September, 10:00 to 16:00, according to Grandvalira, and drops you at Solanelles for walks. Without going up, the Camí de les Pardines, just over 3 km, follows the hillside above the village to Engolasters Lake. Els Cortals d’Encamp, with its stone barns and small suspension bridge, is the nearest high mountain scenery. On the first Saturday of June, the parish also holds its offering at the Oratory of the Virgin of Ecology, one of Andorra’s more unusual local traditions.

Which hotel to look for

In 2022 Encamp council’s accommodation list was heavy on apartments, many of them in Pas de la Casa. In the village itself, Grandvalira’s blog names the Montecarlo and Les Pardines 1819 Mountain Suites & Spa. I haven’t seen their ratings in an official source, so here’s my rule instead. Near the Funicamp or a Funibus stop in winter, near the centre in summer. The tourist tax is extra, and since your GHIC is no use here, pack travel insurance along with the ski gear.
