Clothes and sports shops in Andorra, from the capital to the slopes

Andorra sells fashion like a much bigger city and sports kit like the mountain country it is. I treat them separately. Clothes are for strolling the centre of the capital, while ski boots and bikes are best bought close to where you’ll use them.

Where are the clothes shops?

Nearly all the fashion sits in three parts of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany. First, The Shopping Mile, a partly pedestrianised strip a mile long made up of Vivand (the old Avinguda Carlemany in Escaldes), Avinguda Meritxell and Fener Boulevard. The tourist board describes it as the place where the best-known brands and the most emblematic stores come together.

Second, Riberaygua i Travesseres, also in the capital, with a pedestrian stretch and plenty of neighbourhood shops. Third, the old town, which mixes clothes shops with a good number of places to eat, welcome halfway through an afternoon. I describe that quarter in Andorra la Vella old town.

The formats cover everything. Shopping centres with international brands, department stores with brand corners, multi-brand boutiques (the tourist board picks out Rockerol for its own personality) and flagship stores. At the top end, the Andorra Selected label gathers the most exclusive boutiques. If you prefer pre-loved, La Massana runs the Vide Dressing market for vintage and second-hand fashion.

Ski kit, bought at the lifts

This is where I have a firm view. Boots and skis should be bought where you’ll ski. The tourist board explains that at the Grandvalira access points in Encamp and Canillo, and at those in La Massana and Ordino, sports shops sell and hire the latest models in winter, ready to try on the snow. In Canillo the shops are split between the village, El Tarter and Soldeu, and in Encamp they cluster around the Funicamp.

The advantage isn’t price, which nobody publishes. It’s being able to walk back in the next morning and have a tight boot stretched. If you’re weighing up buying against renting, I compare the two in ski hire in Andorra.

Bikes, mountains and everything else

Cycling has its own shopping circuit. The tourist board talks about more than 600 km of routes and 21 mountain passes, and around twenty specialist shops for road, mountain, downhill, e-bikes and gravel, clustered in La Massana, Santa Coloma and Sant Julià de Lòria, most with their own workshop. In summer, Naturland, the Pal Arinsal Bike Park and Grandvalira hire bikes next to their trails.

Hiking, climbing and trail-running gear is available in every shopping area. Campervan owners will find two stores dedicated to camping in Sant Julià and Santa Coloma, and there are around ten hunting and fishing shops, some of which sell fishing permits on the spot.

Brands you won’t find at home

What I like most here is the home-grown kit. The tourist board names 468 Km2 and Otso, two Andorran labels making technical clothing for snow, cycling and trail running, and Forestal and Commencal, both building downhill bikes. Commencal has also moved into ski and snowboard equipment. If you want a souvenir that means something, I’d pick one of these over a T-shirt you could buy on any British high street.

In summer the tourist board also mentions local fairs such as La Serenalla Market and the Pitavola del Comapedrosa, where Andorran brands show their latest gear to the public. If your trip lines up with one, it’s a relaxed way to see the local labels in one place, talk to the people who make them and try things on without the pressure of a shop floor.

Sales, and the UK allowance

Andorra Turisme says the sales start earlier than in neighbouring countries, at the end of June for summer and the end of December for winter. That’s when I’d look at everyday clothes, and I’d cross off anything I can already buy at a similar price back home.

For a British visitor the limit comes at home. gov.uk allows £390 of other goods into Great Britain tax-free, and if you go over, tax and duty apply to the whole value, so a single premium jacket or a new bike can use up the allowance on its own.
