Eating out in Luxembourg
Where to eat in Luxembourg, from a Grund bistro to a starred table
The best places to eat in Luxembourg fall into four groups. Traditional bistros, patisseries and tea rooms, Moselle wineries with bars and terraces, and fine dining, with 12 Michelin-starred restaurants and 3 Bib Gourmands in the selection shown in September 2026. For dinner with some atmosphere in the capital, head down to the Grund or Clausen.

- For Luxembourgish food, a bistro; for dinner with atmosphere, the Grund and Clausen.
- The Michelin Guide lists 12 starred restaurants in Luxembourg, two of them with two stars.
- There are 3 Bib Gourmands, Michelin's pick for very good food at moderate prices.
- Service is included in menu prices by law.
My ideal day in the capital would be lunch in a bistro serving Luxembourgish food, cake in a Ville Haute patisserie in the afternoon and dinner in the Grund. If there's room for a splurge, I'd spend it on a Bib Gourmand or on a starred lunch, usually the most sensible way to try that kind of cooking.

Dinner beside the Alzette
The Grund packs bars, pubs and restaurants along the river, and the city's tourist office suggests it for a romantic evening. Next door, Clausen has bars and restaurants in the old Mousel brewery.

02 Worth the splurge
Twelve starred tables in a small country
In September 2026 the Michelin Guide lists twelve starred restaurants in Luxembourg, two of them with two stars, Ma Langue Sourit in Oetrange and Louis Linster in Frisange.

03 To save money
Bib Gourmand for good food at fair prices
Michelin's Bib Gourmand goes to places with very good food at moderate prices. In Luxembourg that means K restaurant (Huldange), Parc Le'h (Dudelange) and Bazaar in the capital.

No service charge surprise
By law, bars and restaurants must show prices including service, inside and out. There's nothing added at the end, so you can compare menus from the pavement.

Luxembourg has a curious reputation when it comes to food. Everyone talks about its Michelin stars and hardly anyone about where people eat on an ordinary Tuesday. I care about the second as much as the first, and in a country this small you can do both on the same trip. Here’s how to choose without trusting lists nobody puts their name to.
Four ways to eat in Luxembourg
The tourist board frames it as a cuisine that mirrors the country’s diversity, with room for the friendly bistro and for the gastronomic restaurant. I’d split it into four settings. The bistro serving Luxembourgish food, where you order Judd mat Gaardebounen or Bouneschlupp. The patisserie or tea room, for breakfast and afternoon cake. The Moselle winery, with fried fish and crémant. And fine dining, with a remarkable density of stars for the size of the place. What to order in the first is covered dish by dish in Luxembourg food.
Where to have dinner in the capital
If you only have one evening, the Grund. In the words of the city’s tourist office, it’s a spot for bars, pubs and restaurants beside the Alzette and suggests it for after-work drinks or a romantic night out. You drop down from the Ville Haute by lift or on foot, and dining at the bottom of the rock is one of those things that justifies the trip. There’s more on the neighbourhood in the Grund.
Clausen, next door, has a different feel. The buildings of the old Mousel brewery have become a complex of bars, restaurants and clubs, and nights there run later and louder. For a quiet dinner I’d pick the Grund, and for a drink afterwards, Clausen.

Patisseries and tea rooms for breakfast
For breakfast or a mid-afternoon stop, the capital’s sweet shops get a full page of their own from the tourist board. Oberweis, founded in 1964, has branches where you can sit down and eat. Léa Linster, whom the tourist board calls the only woman to have won the Bocuse d’Or, runs a tea room near the Grand Ducal Palace with her famous madeleines. Directly opposite the palace, Nathalie Bonn’s Chocolate House serves chocolate on a spoon that you melt into hot milk. For me that’s the nicest way to start a day in the Ville Haute.
Which are the best restaurants in Luxembourg?
I’m not going to invent a league table. What does exist are named distinctions. The Michelin selection on the guide’s website in September 2026 gives two stars to Ma Langue Sourit in Oetrange and Louis Linster in Frisange, and one star to ten others, among them Mosconi, with its terrace by the Alzette since 1986, and Le Lys in the Villa Pétrusse. The full list, with where each one is, lives in Michelin star restaurants in Luxembourg.
If you’re unsure, look at the Bib Gourmands, Michelin’s award for very good food at moderate prices. The country has three, K restaurant up in Huldange, Bazaar in the capital and Parc Le’h in Dudelange, and my page on cheap eats in Luxembourg covers how I’d use them.

Eating along the Moselle and in the north
Outside the capital, the best table is on the Moselle. The tourist board recommends its wines with a plate of fried fish, and several wineries have a wine bar or a terrace above the river, such as the Pavillon at Caves St Martin in Remich or the Caves du Sud at Remerschen. If you’re tasting, stay the night. Further north, Vianden has restaurants and cafés in its pedestrianised centre, many looking over the Our, according to the same tourist board, and Diekirch adds the beer still brewed in the town.
Worth knowing before you sit down
Luxembourg law makes bars and restaurants show what you’ll actually pay, service and all, on the terrace as well as indoors, which lets you compare menus from the street and there’s no service charge waiting at the end. Menus usually come in French first, the working language of Luxembourg’s restaurants. Eating out isn’t cheap. Eurostat puts the price level for restaurants and hotels at 123.6, with the EU average at 100. With that in mind, a bistro lunch gives you the best return on what you spend and what you learn about the country.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxembourg and pick one that fits your day.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I eat in Luxembourg?
A traditional bistro for Judd mat Gaardebounen, the Grund for dinner by the river, a Moselle winery for friture and crémant and, budget allowing, one of the country's 12 Michelin-starred restaurants.
What are the best restaurants in Luxembourg?
There's no official ranking. The closest thing is the Michelin Guide, which in September 2026 gives two stars to Ma Langue Sourit (Oetrange) and Louis Linster (Frisange) and one star to ten more.
Where is the best area for dinner in Luxembourg City?
The Grund, which the city's tourist office recommends for a romantic evening, with bars, pubs and restaurants along the Alzette. Clausen, next door, is livelier and better for drinks after dinner.
Where can I get breakfast in Luxembourg City?
In the patisseries and tea rooms of the centre. The tourist board mentions Oberweis, whose shops include places to eat, Léa Linster's tea room near the palace and Nathalie Bonn's Chocolate House opposite it.
Do I need to tip in Luxembourg restaurants?
Service is included in bar and restaurant prices by law, so nothing is added to the bill. There's no official tipping figure, so leaving something extra is a gesture rather than an expectation.
Is eating out in Luxembourg expensive?
Yes, by European standards. Eurostat puts Luxembourg's price level for restaurants and hotels at 123.6, with the EU average at 100. A bistro lunch or a Bib Gourmand is the best way to eat well for less.
