Winterlights opens on Friday 20 November 2026
Luxembourg in November, when the capital switches the lights on
Luxembourg in November averages 5.2°C (41°F) at Findel, with 51.1 hours of sunshine and nearly 11 foggy days. The 2026 calendar makes up for it, with the City Party on the 14th, the opening of Winterlights on the 20th and the Fête des Vins et Crémants from the 27th to the 29th, plus the first Advent markets outside the capital.

- November averages 5.2°C at Findel, with 51.1 hours of sunshine and 10.8 foggy days.
- Winterlights opens its markets in the capital on 20 November 2026 and runs to 3 January 2027.
- The Fête des Vins et Crémants brings the Moselle into town from 27 to 29 November 2026.
- 1 November is a bank holiday; the Grand Duke's birthday on the 11th isn't.
I wouldn't sell November as a month for the countryside. What I would do is a long weekend in the capital from the 20th, with Winterlights freshly open and without December's crowds, and if the dates work, the Saturday of the wine and crémant fair to taste the Moselle without leaving town.

01 Most beautiful
Winterlights in its first week
The capital's Christmas markets open on 20 November 2026. Those first evenings, with everything newly lit and fewer people than in December, are the ones I'd pick.

02 My tip
The whole Moselle in a city weekend
From 27 to 29 November 2026 the Fête des Vins et Crémants brings the Moselle's winemakers into the capital. If you won't get down to the cellars, this is the way to taste them.

03 Getting there
Lift closed on the morning of 2 November
The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift stops from 9:00 on Monday 2 November 2026 for maintenance. That day you walk or take a bus down to the lower town.

04 To save money
Village fairs on a Sunday
Strassen's old-style fair (Sunday 8th) and the open day at Kehlen's distillery museum (Sunday 15th) are cheap Sunday outings a short hop from the city, with food from local clubs.

What I would book
November is the darkest month of Luxembourg’s autumn, and yet its calendar is one of the fullest. It opens with a bank holiday and a week of school holidays, carries on with Sunday village fairs and ends with the capital lit up for Christmas. Go knowing it’s a city trip, and that the light will be gone by mid-afternoon.
Cold, damp and mostly grey
November averages 5.2°C (41°F) at Findel, nearly five degrees colder than October, and sunshine stays at 51.1 hours for the whole month, only a little more than December. What really shapes a visit is the fog, which settles in on 10.8 days on average, and the rain, 71.7 mm that arrives as long grey spells rather than storms. Ice on the ground is still unusual, at 0.2 days of black ice on average, so it’s less about slipping and more about staying dry.
The records swing both ways. On 2 November 2020 Findel hit 19.8°C, and on 23 November 1998 it dropped to −11.1°C. To see November next to the other eleven months, go to Luxembourg weather.
All Saints’ and the school break
Sunday 1 November 2026 is All Saints’ Day, one of Luxembourg’s eleven bank holidays. As it lands on a Sunday it changes very little for a visitor, since shops are already on reduced weekend hours. Luxembourg’s schools are off until 8 November, so the first week brings more families to the museums.
On Monday 2 November 2026 the Pfaffenthal panoramic lift is out of action from 9:00 for its monthly check. And on the Sunday after 2 November, hunters gather at the Breechkaul, a rock amphitheatre in Berdorf, for St Hubert’s Mass at 10:45, accompanied by hunting horns. It’s one of the few dates in the Mullerthal I’d plan a trip around at this time of year.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxembourg for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Why isn’t 11 November a holiday?
Because Luxembourg always celebrates its sovereign’s birthday on 23 June. The date was fixed in 1961, and the Ville de Luxembourg points out that it holds even when the reigning Grand Duke’s birthday falls elsewhere in the calendar, as it does for Guillaume, born on 11 November. The reason is down to the weather. Grand Duchess Charlotte’s birthday was in January, and the party was moved to summer so people could enjoy it outdoors. The full story, with the torchlight eve and the fireworks, is in Luxembourg National Day.
Sunday fairs and a distillery open day
Outside the capital, November has small, local dates that I rate as some of the most genuine of the month. On Sunday 8 November 2026 Strassen holds its Kiermes wéi fréier, an old-style fair with games and food run by local clubs in the car park of the Paul Barblé cultural centre, from 11:00 to 18:00. On Sunday the 15th, the distillery museum in Kehlen opens its doors from 11:00 with a distilling demonstration, music and food. Both are cheap and only a few kilometres from the city on free public transport.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxembourg for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
The lights go on on the 20th
On Saturday 14 November 2026 the capital holds its City Party, and a week later, on Friday the 20th, the Winterlights season begins and lasts until 3 January, with Christmas markets across several squares, concerts and shows. The markets one by one are in Luxembourg Christmas markets. From the 27th to the 29th comes the Fête des Vins et Crémants, when Moselle producers set up in town, and the same weekend Mondorf-les-Bains, the Moselle spa town, opens its own Christmas market, which in 2026 returns for the following two weekends.
On Sunday 29 November 2026 Wiltz also holds its Naklosmoart, a St Nicholas market in the castle amphitheatre from 13:00 to 18:00, with the saint arriving for the children. It’s the curtain-raiser for Kleeschen, Luxembourg’s St Nicholas, on 6 December.
How I’d do November
A long weekend in the capital from the 20th, with museums in the morning, markets at dusk and Saturday the 28th at the wine fair. Findel is a short tram ride from town, and a train via Brussels or Paris is a sensible alternative if you’d rather not fly. Remember you’re entering Schengen, so the EES will register you on your first arrival. If you want a bit of countryside, the Sundays of the 8th or 15th work for a short trip out. The month before is Luxembourg in October and the one after is Luxembourg in December. The whole season sits in Luxembourg in autumn, and every month side by side in the best time to visit Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxembourg on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
Is November a cold month to visit Luxembourg?
Cold and damp rather than bitter. Findel averages 5.2°C, with 71.7 mm of rain and only 51.1 hours of sunshine across the month. Fog is the real feature, turning up on 10.8 days on average, so think layers and a waterproof.
When do the Christmas markets open in Luxembourg?
In the capital, with Winterlights, on Friday 20 November 2026, running until 3 January 2027. Mondorf-les-Bains opens its market on the weekend of 27 to 29 November.
Is the Grand Duke's birthday a bank holiday?
No. Grand Duke Guillaume was born on 11 November, but National Day is always celebrated on 23 June, a date fixed in 1961 that stays put whatever the reigning Grand Duke's birthday.
What is the Fête des Vins et Crémants?
It's the fair where Moselle winegrowers bring their wines and crémants into Luxembourg City. In 2026 it runs from 27 to 29 November, according to the country's official portal.
Is Luxembourg worth visiting in November?
For the capital, yes, especially from the 20th, with the markets open and the museums indoors. For the north or the Mullerthal I'm less keen, with so little daylight and many seasonal sights already closed.
