From 175 to 51 hours of sunshine in three months
Luxembourg in autumn, between the harvest and the first fogs
In autumn Luxembourg drops from a 14.3°C average in September to 5.2°C in November, and sunshine falls from 175 to 51 hours a month. It's harvest time on the Moselle, with Fiederwäissen, the Nuit des Musées (10 October 2026) and Schengen's Hunnefeier (18 October). Many seasonal sights close between mid-October and November.

My kind of autumn in Luxembourg is September and the first half of October. There's still light for walking, the Moselle is mid-harvest and the woods are turning. From November I'd make it a trip for the capital and its museums, with an eye on Winterlights.

Luxembourg in winter
What I would book
Autumn in Luxembourg is really two seasons. September and much of October stretch summer out with light, the grape harvest and colourful woods. November, by contrast, is winter in all but name, with fog, little sun and the country waiting for the Christmas markets. Here’s how I’d use each part of it.
From September light to November fog
Few seasons change so much so quickly. Findel’s normals give 14.3°C in September, 9.9°C in October and 5.2°C in November, from about 58°F down to 41°F. Sunshine drops from 174.9 hours to 106.7 and then 51.1, and fog grows from 3.7 days in September to 10.8 in November. October is the wettest of the three at 76.2 mm. For the capital, STATEC gives October average highs of 14.7°C and lows of 5.7°C.
The capital’s tourist office has a clear favourite for autumn photos, the golden days in the Pétrusse valley, when the trees turn beneath the Passerelle. Visit Luxembourg ties the season to castles deep in the woods, which in the Ardennes and the Mullerthal look quite different under yellow leaves.
September, wine month
On the Moselle, September means harvest. On the second weekend Grevenmacher holds its grape festival, which the national portal describes as the country’s biggest wine festival, and on the third Wormeldange stages three days of Riesling Open. In 2027 the capital’s Schueberfouer runs until 8 September and school holidays end on the 14th, which makes the back end of September the calmer fortnight. Month by month, see Luxembourg in September.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Remich on Booking.com and filter by area before price.
October, museums by night and the end of the harvest
The Nuit des Musées falls on Saturday 10 October 2026, when the museums of the capital stay open from 17:00 to 1:00, with a wristband at €10 bought ahead or €15 on the night. It’s my favourite autumn evening in the city. On Sunday the 18th Schengen closes the harvest with the Hunnefeier, where the fastest grape picker used to win a live cockerel and now takes home a handmade clay one, among a flea market, vintage tractors and Fiederwäissen, the new wine still fermenting. The full wine calendar is in Luxembourg wine festivals.
October is also closing month, and Luxembourg in October goes through it date by date. In 2026 the Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg ends its season on Sunday the 11th, the Vianden chairlift on Monday the 19th, and Grevenmacher’s butterflies stop flying for visitors on Saturday the 31st. Vianden Castle stays open all the same, on shorter autumn hours, 10:00 to 17:00, since the start of October.
November, the capital gets ready for December
November opens with All Saints, a bank holiday, in the middle of a week of school holidays (31 October to 8 November 2026). On the Sunday after 2 November, in Berdorf’s Breechkaul amphitheatre, carved out of the rock, hunters gather for a St Hubert’s Mass accompanied by horns. On 14 November 2026 the capital throws its City Party, and on the 20th Winterlights opens, running until 3 January. A week later, between the 27th and the 29th, Moselle growers come into town for the Fête des Vins et Crémants. Details are in Luxembourg in November.
To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Remich on Expedia and filter by area before price.
Walking in autumn
With spring, this is the best time for the Mullerthal. The sandstone looks different with leaves on the ground, and Move We Carry keeps moving luggage between accommodation until 30 November. The national portal does warn that some stretches may be muddy or rerouted, so before a long stage I’d check with the Echternach or Berdorf tourist office. And I’d leave margin to get back, because in November it’s dark early and fog turns up on roughly one day in three.
Getting there and around from the UK
Autumn is an easy season for a short break from Britain. Luxair publishes Findel routes to London City, Manchester and Edinburgh, and tram T1 takes you from the airport into the city free of charge. The capital’s trains and buses are free too in second class, so a day on the Moselle or in the Mullerthal costs nothing to reach. Bring your GHIC plus travel insurance, and pack an adaptor, as the sockets are type F.
If you are short on time, see the best tours in Remich and pick one that fits your day.
How I’d plan it
My pick would be late September or early October, with two days in the capital and one or two between the Moselle and the Mullerthal. In November I’d do a short city break, with museums and, from the 20th, the markets. Whatever the date, pack a waterproof, because autumn is when the rain takes charge again.
Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.
