Pétange, the commune of the steam train and the Celtic hillfort

Pétange (Péiteng) is a Minett commune of 21,290 residents on 1 January 2026, spread across Pétange, Rodange and Lamadelaine, close to the French and Belgian borders. The Train 1900 to Fond-de-Gras leaves from its station, and within its boundaries lie the Celtic hillfort of the Titelberg, the Prënzebierg nature reserve and the Lamadelaine mill.

Full read: 4 min

  • Pétange has 21,290 residents in three localities, Pétange, Rodange and Lamadelaine.
  • The Train 1900 to Fond-de-Gras departs from its station.
  • Its boundaries take in the Titelberg hillfort and the Prënzebierg reserve.
  • The commune claims the country's oldest carnival parade, dating from 1937.

Pétange is above all the starting point for the Train 1900, and that's how I'd use it. But before boarding, half an hour on the Titelberg or in the Prënzebierg reserve is well spent, because they're the part of the Minett almost nobody looks at and the part that says most about its history.

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Worth the splurge

    Up to Fond-de-Gras by steam

The Train 1900 leaves from a platform behind the CFL station on rue de Niederkorn and covers 8 km to Fond-de-Gras in about 25 minutes. Parking is free.

    Fond-de-Gras
  2. 02 Most beautiful

    The Treveri hillfort

The Titelberg is a 50-hectare spur above the Chiers with a first-century BC hillfort ringed by nearly 3 km of ramparts, and panels explaining it.

  3. 03 My tip

    Orchids in an old mine

The Prënzebierg reserve, protected since 1991, covers 255 hectares and has more than twenty orchid species. The commune suggests a 7 km discovery trail and a geology trail.

  4. 04 Getting there

    Trains towards three countries

CFL lines from the capital to Rodange, Athus and Longwy all run through Pétange, and FlixBus stops at Rodange. Within Luxembourg, second-class rail is free.

    Luxembourg free public transport

What I would book

Pétange tends to appear in guides only as the place where you catch the steam train, and that is indeed its best card. But the commune has more to it than that, a Celtic hillfort, a nature reserve in an old mine, a mill first recorded in the 15th century and a wartime memory that’s very present in its streets.

Three localities in the corner of the country

STATEC’s latest count, on 1 January 2026, puts the commune at 21,290 people, spread across Pétange, Rodange and Lamadelaine. It sits in the Chiers valley in the south-west corner of the Minett, pressed up against France and Belgium. CFL lines from the capital to Rodange, Athus and Longwy all run through Pétange, and FlixBus stops at Rodange, which makes it a crossroads between three countries.

The Train 1900 platform

The Train 1900 leaves from its own platform behind the CFL station on rue de Niederkorn, where parking is free. The run to Fond-de-Gras is 8 km and takes about 25 minutes, climbing past the Prënzebierg and skirting the Lamadelaine hills. It runs in season, May to September, mostly on Sundays, and tickets are sold on the spot on the day. With the CFL station right alongside, you can come from Luxembourg City without a car and without paying for the train.

The Titelberg, a hillfort above the Chiers

In Celtic times the Titelberg was a key site. It’s a 50-hectare rocky spur overlooking the Chiers valley, and in the first century BC the Treveri built a large hillfort there, ringed by nearly 3 km of ramparts. It later became a Gallo-Roman settlement until the early fifth century. visitluxembourg calls it the main hillfort of the Treveri, and the remains of the defences are still visible. Panels explain the site, and access is free.

What gets me up the hill is one line in the official listing itself. The Titelberg is the only oppidum on Luxembourg soil and, going by recent excavations, it was the capital of the Treveri. Don’t expect standing walls, because what’s left is traces and quiet above the valley. The way in is on rue du Titelberg in Rodange, and the contact is the same Minett Park team that runs Fond-de-Gras, so it pairs neatly with a morning on the Train 1900.

The Prënzebierg, orchids on red earth

Since 20 November 1991 the Prënzebierg has been a protected area of 255.30 hectares within the Natura 2000 network. Once the mines closed, nature moved back in, and today it has more than twenty orchid species, ponds and a wide range of butterflies. The commune suggests two routes, a 7 km discovery trail to the Giele Botter and a geology trail with nine panels on how minette formed and was extracted. A roaming flock of 500 sheep keeps the grassland open.

The Lamadelaine mill

The Lamadelaine mill is recorded as early as 1442. It was destroyed in 1635 during the Thirty Years’ War and rebuilt towards the end of that century. The Franck family owned it from the French Revolution until 1954, when the last miller, Jean Franck, sold it to the town. After several renovations it began grinding wheat again on 4 October 1991, and since 1997 it has belonged to the state. The commune offers visits for groups by booking, including one billed as “in the presence of the Millejängi”, the nickname of that last miller, for groups of twelve to twenty.

Wartime memory

Pétange was liberated on 9 September 1944, and the national story of those years is told in Luxembourg in the Second World War. Every year the commune remembers Lieutenant Hyman Josefson, the first American soldier killed on Luxembourg soil, shot as US troops advanced along rue d’Athus. Beside the parish church stands the Borne du Passeur, unveiled in 1961 in honour of the resistance’s border guides, on a plinth that was once part of the Gëlle Fra and was hidden during the occupation. In Rodange, a plaque marks where Grand Duchess Charlotte left the country on 10 May 1940. At the WAX centre, an old mill brought back to life in 2012, the Maison Rouge devotes a space to the invasion, occupation and liberation of Pétange.

Festivals and getting around

Pétange’s carnival parade began in 1937, and the commune bills it as the oldest and biggest in the country. Luxembourg’s parades take place between Candlemas and Ash Wednesday, and the 2027 date hasn’t been published yet; I’ll add it to the guide to Luxembourg’s carnival when it is. On the first Sunday of Lent, Buergbrennen bonfire crosses also burn on several hilltops around the commune. Walking from Pétange to Differdange, the Minett Trail stage between the two stations is 16.6 km. The rest of the area’s highlights are in the Minett guide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
