The ancient oak at Saeul, some 280 years old, with its huge leafy crown over a meadow beside a farmhouse

Saeul is Luxembourg's least populated commune, with 1,081 residents on 1 January 2026 across five localities. The government portal places the country's oldest oak here, at the entrance to the village beside an old washhouse and a pond. It also has a Romanesque church, the chapel at Kapweiler and a garden of Luxembourgish roses in Calmus.

  • Saeul is Luxembourg's least populated commune, with 1,081 residents in 2026.
  • It has the country's oldest oak, according to the government portal.
  • Its church is Romanesque, and Calmus has a garden of Luxembourgish roses.
  • Drive in on the N8 or N12, or cycle from Useldange.

I'd come to Saeul by bike from Useldange, which is how the official portal pitches it. The oak, a look round the Romanesque church and, in season, the rose garden at Calmus. It's a short, lovely stop rather than a full day.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The country's oldest oak

The government portal calls it Luxembourg's oldest oak. It stands at the village entrance as you come from Redange and is listed among the country's remarkable trees.

  2. 02 Getting there

    By bike from Useldange

The 13.43 km Sunseeker route starts at Useldange Castle and runs out to the oak, with a picnic stop in its shade.

    Luxembourgish roses in Calmus

The Um Titzebierg garden in Calmus gathers a wide range of Luxembourgish roses, according to the Guttland regional tourist office.

Saeul holds two records that suit it well. It’s the commune with the fewest people in Luxembourg, 1,081 at the start of 2026, and the country’s official portal credits it with the oldest oak in the land. A tiny village with an enormous tree is reason enough, for me, to go a few kilometres out of my way.

The oak and the pond

At the entrance to the village, coming from Redange, stands a majestic oak that the commune lists on its register of remarkable trees. Between the oak and the restored washhouse, the waters of the Goldkneppchen form a natural pond, and farm markets were held on this very spot from 1846. The Guttland regional tourist office describes it as a park for a rest, and a walking circuit and three running routes start here.

What else is in the village?

The centre is arranged around a Romanesque church, with a flower-filled island that keeps the remains of the old churchyard, alongside the town hall, school and a few shops. The commune explains that the village grew up on the old road from Arlon to Mersch, below a Celtic hillfort called the Kaschelt, and that today it’s carved up by the N8 and N12 main roads, which lorry drivers know well and residents could happily do without.

Kapweiler and Calmus

In Kapweiler, a hamlet of 48 people according to the commune, St Anne’s chapel stands out for its square tower, protected as a national monument and being restored according to the regional office. In Calmus, the Um Titzebierg garden brings together a wide range of Luxembourgish roses and draws garden lovers. Near Schwebach there’s a well-regarded restaurant putting a modern spin on local cooking, though the regional office gives no prices or hours.

Is it worth the detour?

If you’re driving the N12 north or west anyway, yes, because it takes ten minutes and the oak is right by the road. I wouldn’t make a special trip from the capital just for it, though. Where Saeul really fits is on a bike ride through the Attert valley, taking in Useldange, Vichten and Saeul in one morning. The distances are short, the terrain is gentle and each village brings something different, a castle, a Roman mosaic and a venerable tree. I’d keep Calmus for when the roses are in bloom, and I’d bring a picnic for the oak.

Getting there

There’s no railway to Saeul. By car, take the N8 or N12. By bike, the government portal suggests the 13.43 km Sunseeker route, which starts at Useldange Castle and stops in the shade of the oak, ideal with a picnic. That fills a morning nicely in the western Guttland, and you’ll find the neighbouring sights under Useldange and Vichten.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Luxemburgo and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.
