Four markets in the capital, 45 days
Luxembourg's Christmas markets, square by square
Luxembourg City's Christmas season, Winterlights, runs from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with four markets on Place d'Armes, Place de la Constitution, Place de Paris and Place Guillaume II. Mondorf-les-Bains, Wiltz and Echternach have their own. Shops are shut by law on 25 December and 1 January.

- Winterlights runs in Luxembourg City from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027.
- Four markets sit on Place d'Armes, Place de la Constitution, Place de Paris and Place Guillaume II.
- Mondorf-les-Bains opens on three weekends and Wiltz has a one-day St Nicholas market on 29 November.
- Shops are closed by law on 25 December and 1 January.
For a Christmas market break I'd pick a weekend in early December. Winterlights is up and running, Luxembourg's school holidays haven't started, and the four squares are close enough that you can do the lot in an afternoon and still have time for a museum when the rain comes in.

01 Most beautiful
The market with the valley view
Wantermaart puts 41 chalets, a Ferris wheel and a giant pyramid around the Gëlle Fra on Place de la Constitution, looking straight over the Pétrusse valley and the Adolphe Bridge.

02 My tip
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, done by 18:00
No shop may trade past 18:00 on 24 and 31 December, and on 25 December and 1 January they're closed by law, bakeries and a few others aside. The markets, pubs and restaurants aren't covered by that rule.

03 Getting there
Free trains and buses to the smaller markets
Public transport is free across the country, so hopping out to Mondorf-les-Bains or Echternach for their markets costs you nothing but the journey time.

04 Worth the splurge
A guided walk round the markets
The city tourist office on Place Guillaume II runs a guided tour of the Christmas markets in the season. Book it with them directly rather than through a reseller.

What I would book
If you’re after a Christmas market weekend that isn’t another round of Cologne or Strasbourg, Luxembourg makes a strong case. The capital is compact, its squares are minutes apart, and Winterlights turns them into one market spread across the centre. Here’s what each one is like, what’s on outside the city and the two days when you shouldn’t count on the shops.
Six weeks of Winterlights
Winterlights is the Ville de Luxembourg’s own programme, and the 2026 edition opens on 20 November and closes on 3 January 2027, with Christmas markets on several sites, concerts, exhibitions, shows and entertainment for all ages. In practice that means four named markets on the same dates, and I treat them as a single late-afternoon walk from the old town down to the Gare district.
Visit Luxembourg sums up the food well. Look for Boxemännercher, little brioche men, and Gromperekichelcher, the potato fritters that turn up at every Luxembourgish festival. To drink, mulled wine or Feuerzangenbowle, a sugar loaf soaked in rum and set alight over a pot of rum, red wine and fruit juice. St Nicholas, known locally as Kleeschen, also does the rounds of the markets handing out presents.
Which market is which?
The oldest is the Lëtzebuerger Chrëschtmaart on Place d’Armes, with the big tree, the nativity scene, two carousels and chalets selling scarves, wooden toys and handmade candles. It’s the most traditional, and I’d leave it until last with a hot chocolate.
The one I’d photograph is the Wantermaart on Place de la Constitution. Its 41 chalets ring the Gëlle Fra war memorial, with a golden fir, a giant pyramid, a Ferris wheel, trampolines and two rides, and the square looks out over the Pétrusse valley and the Adolphe Bridge. With only one afternoon, start here while there’s still light.
Place de Paris, in the Gare district, has the Niklosmaart, the market for eating. Mulled wine with or without alcohol, burgers, soups, sausages, waffles, churros and crêpes, plus Advent wreaths and decorations, and on some days children can call on St Nicholas at his cottage. Winterkids on Place Guillaume II is designed entirely around families.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
Smaller markets out of town
What I like about Luxembourg at Christmas is that a free bus or train puts you in a different market within the hour. Mondorf-les-Bains sets up on Place des Villes Jumelées over three weekends in 2026, 27 to 29 November, 4 to 6 December and 11 to 13 December, with chalets, concerts and activities.
Wiltz has a single day, Sunday 29 November 2026, from 13:00 to 18:00 in the castle amphitheatre, when St Nicholas arrives in town. Visit Luxembourg also mentions a market in Echternach by the floodlit abbey and one around the Slate Museum at Haut-Martelange, in the west. I couldn’t find published 2026 dates for either, so check the official listings before you travel. And if you’d rather swap stalls for quiet, the tourist board suggests a winter walk round the castle at Clervaux, in the north, as an escape from the Christmas rush. In December the north is short days, bare forest and very few visitors, which for some people is exactly the point.
Shops, bank holidays and school breaks
This is where visitors get caught out. On 25 December and 1 January shops can’t open at all, bakers, butchers, patisseries and tea rooms excepted. On 24 and 31 December they shut by 18:00, and 26 December, St Stephen’s Day, is a bank holiday with Sunday trading hours. The markets, pubs and restaurants aren’t bound by that law. The full list is in Luxembourg public holidays.
Luxembourg’s Christmas school holidays run from 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, so the markets, and Winterkids in particular, get busier with families from then on.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxemburgo for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
A weekend plan
I’d arrive on a Friday in early December, fly into Findel or come in by train via Brussels, and base myself in the old town. First evening, the Wantermaart as the light fades, then Place d’Armes. Saturday morning in a museum, which you’ll appreciate with 2.3°C on average and just 41.9 hours of sunshine in the whole month, then Place de Paris in the afternoon. On Sunday, a train or bus to Mondorf if it’s one of its weekends. If you’d like someone to walk you round, the city tourist office runs a guided tour of the markets. The rest of the month is in Luxembourg in December.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxemburgo on GetYourGuide.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.

Frequently asked questions
When are the Luxembourg Christmas markets in 2026?
The four Winterlights markets in Luxembourg City run from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Mondorf-les-Bains opens over three weekends (27 to 29 November, 4 to 6 and 11 to 13 December) and Wiltz holds its St Nicholas market on Sunday 29 November.
Is Luxembourg worth visiting at Christmas?
For the capital, I'd say yes. The four market squares are a short walk apart, the Wantermaart looks over the Pétrusse valley and the old town is lit up throughout. Just pack for 2.3°C on average and very little daylight.
Where is the main Christmas market in Luxembourg City?
The original one is on Place d'Armes, but there are four. Wantermaart is on Place de la Constitution, Niklosmaart on Place de Paris in the Gare district and Winterkids on Place Guillaume II.
Are shops open on Christmas Day in Luxembourg?
No. On 25 December and 1 January shops must stay shut, apart from bakers, butchers, patisseries and tea rooms, which may open from 05:00 to 19:00. On 24 and 31 December they close by 18:00 at the latest.
How do I get to the Luxembourg Christmas markets from the UK?
Fly into Luxembourg-Findel and take the free tram into town, or come by train via Brussels or Paris. Luxembourg is in Schengen, so expect the EES biometric check on your first entry, and bring a passport under ten years old that's valid for three months after you leave.
What food should I try at the Christmas markets?
Visit Luxembourg singles out Gromperekichelcher, crispy potato fritters, and Boxemännercher, little brioche men. For a drink there's mulled wine or Feuerzangenbowle, a rum-soaked sugar loaf set alight over a punch of rum, red wine and fruit juice.
