Valley of the Seven Castles, closed for works
Hollenfels Castle, a keep best admired from outside
Hollenfels Castle stands on a rocky spur 315 m above sea level over the narrow Eisch valley, in the commune of Helperknapp. First recorded in the 11th century, it has a keep of about 39 m, a corner tower, a curtain wall and a residential wing. In 2026 the interior is closed for renovation and the youth hostel in its outbuildings is temporarily shut.

- Hollenfels Castle is first recorded in the 11th century.
- Its keep of about 39 m stands on a spur 315 m above the Eisch valley.
- In 2026 it's closed for works; the hostel in its outbuildings is shut.
- The best view is from the park beside it.
Don't turn up expecting to go in, because in 2026 you can't. But don't cross it off either. Its keep is the most powerful image in the Eisch valley, and seeing it from the park next door is worth the detour.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 Watch out
Closed for works, no date given
visitluxembourg says visits aren't possible because of renovation works, and publishes no reopening date.
-
02 Most beautiful
The view from the playground
Next to the castle there's a playground with a good view of the keep, says visitluxembourg. For me it's the best angle.

03 Worth the splurge
Sleeping by a keep, once it reopens
The castle's outbuildings house a youth hostel, temporarily closed in 2026. When it reopens, it'll be a cheap way to sleep beside a medieval castle.

04 My tip
Audio guide on your phone
Visit Guttland offers an audio guide to the castle, recorded in 2013, and the Hollenfels walk listing includes an audio track about it.
Of the seven castles along the Eisch, Hollenfels is the easiest to see and the hardest to touch. Its keep, perched on the rock, is the picture I associate with the whole route. Yet in 2026 you can’t go in. visitluxembourg is clear that visits aren’t possible because of renovation works, and the youth hostel in its outbuildings is listed as temporarily closed. Here’s what there is and how to enjoy it from the outside.
A keep on a rocky spur
Perched on a spur of rock at 315 m and keeping watch over the Eisch valley below, a sight visitluxembourg calls imposing. the castle consists of a keep of nearly 40 m, a corner tower, a curtain wall and a residential wing, and you reach it over a masonry bridge across the moat. Visit Guttland puts the keep at 39 m and stresses the impressive view it commands over the valley.
The official sources are brief on its history. Visit Guttland says the castle is first recorded in the 11th century and changed hands several times over the centuries. I’m not going to pad that out with names or dates I haven’t been able to check.
From manor to hostel
The old manor with its keep was converted into a youth hostel and ecology centre, according to visitluxembourg, with the hostel occupying the outbuildings of the medieval castle. The village listing adds forest walks, mountain-bike routes and bookable e-bike hire to the pitch.
The problem is the present. The hostel network shows it as closed for now, and the castle itself is a building site. My reading is that Hollenfels is mid-renovation, and that once it reopens it’ll be one of the cheapest ways to sleep beside a castle in Luxembourg, the kind of thing I’d happily cross the Channel for. I follow it in castle hotels in Luxembourg.
If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Luxembourg for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.
How to see it well
Since you can’t go in, the framing is what matters. visitluxembourg mentions the park next door, with a play area and a clear sightline to the keep, and that’s where I’d stand. From the valley below, the keep looms overhead. Visit Guttland also offers an audio guide to the castle, recorded in 2013, and the 8.51 km Hollenfels walk includes an audio track about it. Everything else in the village is under Hollenfels.
With children
The castle features in visitluxembourg’s family material for the Guttland, which describes Hollenfels as an idyllic village with a medieval castle that sadly isn’t open to the public, and points families to the park next door. With children, I’d pair it with the puzzle trail in the Ansembourg gardens, 1.5 km away, and finish at the playground with the keep as a backdrop. That way a closed castle becomes scenery rather than a disappointment, and nobody spends the afternoon asking why they can’t go in.
Bring snacks and water, as the official listings mention no café at the castle, and I’d pack a light waterproof whatever the forecast.

On the valley route
On Visit Guttland’s driving route, Hollenfels comes after Ansembourg’s new castle, just 1.5 km away, and before the old one, 2.7 km on. It’s the shortest and, for me, the prettiest stretch of the route, pairing the Baroque gardens of Ansembourg Castle with the valley’s finest medieval skyline. The other stops are in valley of the seven castles.
Is it worth going while it’s closed?
On the full drive, definitely, since you pass it anyway and the view repays the stop. If you’re coming just for this, no, because you’ll find the door shut. I’d combine it with Ansembourg and a stretch of the walking loop, and save the interior for when visitluxembourg announces a reopening. In the meantime, if you want to wander round a castle for free, Koerich waits at the end of the same route, and the castles you can visit across the country are ranked in castles in Luxembourg.
So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Hollenfels Castle on GetYourGuide.
Getting there
The address is rue du Château, Hollenfels, in the commune of Helperknapp. The village bus stop is Hollenfels, Schoul, and public transport is free throughout Luxembourg. Drivers can use the car park opposite the start of the walk on rue d’Ansembourg.
If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.
Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
