Berdorf, a plateau village ringed by sandstone

Berdorf is a commune of 2,293 people on a plateau in Luxembourg's Mullerthal region, between Echternach and the Black Ernz valley. It is ringed by sandstone formations such as the Perekop, the Hohllay, the Priedegtstull and the Wanterbaach maze, has about 50 km of local paths and an outdoor climbing area, and Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail runs through it.

  • Berdorf is a commune of 2,293 people on a Mullerthal plateau next to Echternach.
  • Sandstone formations such as the Hohllay, the Perekop and the Wanterbaach maze surround it.
  • It has about 50 km of local paths and Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail crosses it.
  • Climbing on the Wanterbaach cliffs is limited to members of UIAA or IFSC-affiliated clubs.

If you've come to walk and can do without town life, I'd stay here rather than in Echternach. You step out of the hotel and you're among the rocks in ten minutes, and in the afternoon the Trail takes you on foot to Echternach or Müllerthal.

Sergio LeponeMy advice

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    The millstone cave

The Hohllay is a vast cavern opened up by centuries of quarrying. The Romans took building stone from it and medieval masons cut millstones, whose circular marks are still in the rock.

  2. 02 To save money

    Aquatower free with the pass

The 55 m water tower, with an exhibition on water and geology and a viewing platform at 50 m, is free with the LuxembourgPass.

  3. 03 My tip

    Climbing needs a club card

Only members of a club affiliated to the UIAA or the IFSC may climb the Wanterbaach cliffs, and they must carry their membership card and ID.

  4. 04 Getting there

    On foot from Echternach

Route 2 of the Trail covers the 6.8 km from Echternach to Berdorf in 2 to 2.5 hours, via the Wolfsschlucht, the Perekop and the Hohllay.

What I would book

My ranking, scored

What I'd see in Berdorf

My own marks out of 10, weighing how unusual each spot is and how easy it is to reach. All free apart from the Aquatower, which is free with the LuxembourgPass.

  1. Hohllay

A huge quarried cave with two thousand years of use, 50 m from the amphitheatre. The most spectacular thing in the village.

    9.1 out of 10

  2. Perekop

A rock giant by the Echternach road, with an iron ladder up the crack to a viewpoint.

    8.8 out of 10

  3. Wanterbaach-Siweschlëff maze

A labyrinth of boulders between steep gorges, which is also where the climbing area is.

    8.5 out of 10

  4. Raiberhiel

One of the narrowest caves in the region, which you leave by a flight of steps at the far end.

    7.8 out of 10

  5. Breechkaul amphitheatre

A medieval quarry hollow turned into an open-air stage in 1979, with concerts in summer.

    7.2 out of 10

  6. Aquatower

A 55 m water tower with an interactive exhibition and a platform 50 m up over the plateau.

    7.0 out of 10

Berdorf’s tourist office calls the village the heart of Luxembourg’s Little Switzerland, and for once that isn’t hype. It sits on a plateau above the valleys of the Black Ernz, the Sûre and the Aesbach, and around the houses the ground breaks up into sandstone walls, corridors, caves and cracks. If the Mullerthal has a centre for walkers, this is it.

A small commune with five localities

The commune had 2,293 residents on 1 January 2026, 58 more than a year earlier, according to STATEC. The national register gives it five localities, which are Berdorf itself, Bollendorf-Pont, Grundhof, Kalkesbach and Weilerbach. Grundhof is split between Berdorf and Beaufort. In Weilerbach there’s a memorial to American veterans, dedicated mainly to the 10th US Infantry Regiment and the 7th Engineer Combat Battalion, which visitluxembourg lists among its sights.

It isn’t a village of monuments. What you come for is out in the woods, and Berdorf itself is mostly bed, food and trailhead. visitluxembourg puts it just that way, saying its hotels, campsites and other lodgings make it an ideal base for several days of walking.

The rocks, one by one

The Hohllay cave, or Huel Lee, is the one I’d put first. It’s a huge man-made cavern where the Romans took stone and medieval masons cut millstones, whose round scars still mark the walls. Fifty metres away is the Breechkaul amphitheatre, another medieval quarry hollow, turned into an open-air stage in 1979 with concerts in summer.

The Perekop rock is a sandstone giant beside the Echternach road, split by a narrow crack with an iron ladder climbing to a viewpoint. Then there’s the Priedegtstull, the Raiberhiel, which visitluxembourg describes as one of the narrowest caves in the region, left by a set of steps at the far end, and the Wanterbaach-Siweschlëff geological landscape, a maze of boulders between steep gorges. The local office adds the Devil’s Island and the Siebenschlüff to its list of best-known formations.

If you are staying the night, see the best hotel deals in Berdorf for your dates: the well-placed rooms go fast.

Can you climb in Berdorf?

Yes. visitluxembourg lists outdoor rock climbing on the Wanterbaach cliffs, with conditions. Only members of a club affiliated to the UIAA or the IFSC may climb, and nature protection officers can ask to see your membership card together with ID. The old system of individual permits has been abolished. The details are in the guide to rock climbing in Luxembourg.

Walking from the door

The village sits right on Route 2 of the Mullerthal Trail. Eastwards, 6.8 km takes you to Echternach via the Hohllay, the Perekop, the Chipkapass and the Wolfsschlucht. Westwards, 6.4 km drops to the hamlet of Müllerthal through the little Ruetsbaach valley, past the Ruetsbechschlëff cliffs, the Binzeltschlëff, the Priedegtstull, the Werschrummschlëff and the Schnellert woods. The local office also advertises about 50 km of its own paths, and the Hohllay’s listing mentions route E1, 13.5 km, and the 6.6 km Auto-Pédestre circuit.

Beyond the rocks

The Aquatower is a 55 m water tower with an interactive exhibition on drinking water and geology and a viewing platform 50 m up over the plateau. In the week of 29 September 2026 it opened Tuesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00, and it’s free with the LuxembourgPass. The village also has the Schmalen cheese dairy, and Berdorf cheese is known beyond the border, says the local office. On the Sunday after 2 November, at 10:45, the amphitheatre hosts the St Hubert mass with hunting horns, a date with a strong following across the region and over the border.

Getting there and staying over

Berdorf has no railway. You get here by bus, free across Luxembourg, with stops such as Berdorf, Hôtel Pérékop, or by car on the CR 364 from Echternach. From the UK, most people fly into Findel or come by train to Luxembourg City and carry on by bus from there. The Mullerthal Trail website names Berdorf among the places with accommodation right on the trail, alongside Beaufort, Heffingen-Soup and Scheidgen, and even suggests doing the whole Trail from a single base thanks to the buses. The local tourist office is at 5 Beim Martbusch. If Berdorf is full, compare the Mullerthal hotels in Beaufort or Larochette.

Berdorf is also one of the eleven communes of the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall, a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2022. The Aquatower exhibition is about exactly that, the role the sandstone plays in the region’s drinking water.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Berdorf on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
