National museum in the Grund
The Natur Musée, natural history on the banks of the Alzette
Luxembourg's National Museum of Natural History, the Natur Musée, is at 25 rue Münster in the Grund. Its permanent galleries, renewed in 2017, cover more than 1,000 m². As of September 2026 it opens Tuesday to Sunday, until 20:00 on Tuesdays, and costs €7; under-21s and students under 26 get in free.
I'd pencil it into any family trip to the capital, and without children I'd go on a Tuesday evening. From 17:30 it's free, it stays open until 20:00, and it slots in neatly after a wander round the Grund.

What I would keep in mind
-
01 To save money
Free on Tuesday evenings
The museum runs a late opening every Tuesday until 20:00, with free entry from 17:30. Under-21s and students under 26 never pay, whatever the day.
-
02 Money
Covered by the LuxembourgPass
The museum's website lists the Luxembourg Card, now the LuxembourgPass, among the cards that get free entry. If you've bought one for other sights, this one's included.

03 My tip
Check the closing days
As well as every Monday, it shuts on 1 January, 1 May, 23 June (National Day), 1 November and 25 December.

04 Getting there
It's down in the valley
It sits in the Grund on the banks of the Alzette. Walk down from the Corniche or ride the free lift from the Plateau du Saint-Esprit, and go back up the same way.
the Grund
Some museums you visit out of duty; others you actually look forward to. The Natur Musée belongs in the second group, especially if you’re travelling with children. It’s the National Museum of Natural History, in a white building with a slate roof beside the Alzette in the Grund, a few steps from Neumünster Abbey. It isn’t huge, and that works in its favour. An unhurried hour and a half is enough, and you leave with plenty to talk about.
What’s inside
The permanent galleries reopened fully renewed in June 2017 and cover more than 1,000 m². They’re built around three themes, evolution, ecology and geology, with an interactive multimedia system and a database that connects visitors to the plants and wildlife of the Grand Duchy. Temporary exhibitions rotate through the year on top of that.
Behind the display cases sits something you don’t see, and it’s what I find most interesting about the place. The museum is also a research institute and holds the country’s most important zoological, botanical, palaeontological and mineral collections. What’s on show is a small selection of all that, catalogued after long hours of fieldwork.
A word on expectations for British visitors. This is not South Kensington, with its vast halls and queues round the block. It’s a national museum for a country of fewer than 700,000 people, scaled accordingly, and I think that’s exactly why it works. You can read the panels, let children linger at the interactive screens and still have energy left for the walk back up to the old town. Treat it as a focused, well-designed hour or two rather than a full day out.
Tickets and free entry
Adult entry is €7 and the reduced rate €5, as of September 2026, according to the museum’s own website. The list of people who don’t pay is long and generous. Under-21s, students under 26, disabled visitors and holders of several cards go free, including the Luxembourg Card, which is now called the LuxembourgPass.
There’s also a trick I’d use. On Tuesdays the museum has a late opening until 20:00, and from 17:30 entry is free for everyone. It’s the cheapest way to see it, and late afternoon is when the Grund looks its best anyway.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Opening hours and closures
It opens Tuesday to Sunday. Tuesday runs 10:00 until 20:00; the other days, 10:00 until 18:00. It closes every Monday plus five days a year, 1 January, 1 May, 23 June (National Day), 1 November and 25 December. If your trip lands on one of them, move it, because there are no exceptions.
One practical detail to save a wasted walk. The museum is at number 25 rue Münster; number 24 is the research centre, which isn’t open to the public.
With children, the Grund’s best rainy-day plan
With children, few outings in the capital are as complete. The tourist office describes it as a family-welcoming centre, and its size helps, because children don’t run out of steam before the end. And if they’re under 21, which they almost certainly are, they don’t pay. More ideas in Luxembourg with kids.
For a family day I’d pair it with the Neumünster courtyard and the Melusina statue by the river, which is a good excuse to tell them the city’s founding legend. Everything is under five minutes apart on foot.
For a school group or a club, the museum runs guided activities that must be booked in advance through its education service. They cost €50 per group for one hour, €80 for two, €100 for three and €140 for six, for up to 25 people, plus the €5 reduced rate per participant. Not worth it for a single family; well worth it for a class.
Once your dates are set, check which hotels are still free in Luxembourg before prices climb.
Getting there
The museum is at the bottom of the valley. From the upper town you can walk down via the Corniche or the Montée du Grund, or take the public lift linking the Plateau du Saint-Esprit with the district, free like all local transport. If museums are your thing, the National Museum of History and Art is up in the old town, and I round up the rest in museums in Luxembourg.
If you would rather have a local show you round, book a guided tour in Natur Musée and choose by the reviews.
A car frees you from timetables: search car hire in Luxembourg on DiscoverCars and compare companies.
So you do not pay over the odds, look at trains, coaches and flights to Luxembourg on Omio and pick the one that suits you.

What are the Natur Musée's opening hours?
Tuesday 10:00-20:00 and Wednesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00. It's closed on Mondays and on 1 January, 1 May, 23 June, 1 November and 25 December.

At 25 rue Münster in the Grund, the district at the bottom of the Alzette valley, next to Neumünster Abbey. Number 24 on the same street is the research centre, which isn't open to visitors.
Is it good for children?
I'd say it's one of the best family options in the capital. The tourist office pitches it as a family-friendly centre, with galleries renewed in 2017 on evolution, ecology and geology and an interactive multimedia system.
What can you see at the Natur Musée?
More than 1,000 m² of permanent displays on evolution, ecology and geology, drawing on the museum's zoological, botanical, palaeontological and mineral collections, plus temporary exhibitions.
