The Greek Orthodox church at Weiler-la-Tour, white with a dome and bell tower, beside flagpoles with flags

Weiler-la-Tour is a municipality of 2,523 people (1-1-2026) south of the capital, with three localities, Hassel, Syren and Weiler-la-Tour. The River Syre rises at Syren, which also has a neo-Gothic church of 1850 listed as a national monument. visitguttland also points to the little owl trail, the Charly Gaul cycle path and an international barrel-organ festival every other year.

Weiler-la-Tour is countryside south of the capital, and not much more. I'd ride the Charly Gaul cycle path and walk the little owl trail, stop at the neo-Gothic church in Syren and, if the barrel-organ festival is on, stay to listen.

Sergio LeponeMy advice

Before you go

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 Most beautiful

    Syren's neo-Gothic church

It dates from 1850 and is listed as a national monument, according to visitguttland. It stands in Syren, the village where the River Syre rises.

  2. 02 Worth the splurge

    A barrel-organ festival

Every other year, on a summer Sunday, Syren hosts an international barrel-organ festival. visitguttland doesn't publish the next date, so check before you plan around it.

  3. 03 My tip

    The little owl trail

The Steekauzewee is dedicated to the little owl, according to visitguttland. It's a waymarked walk through the local countryside and free to follow.

  4. 04 Getting there

By bike on the Charly Gaul path

The cycle path named after the cyclist Charly Gaul runs through the municipality, according to visitguttland. It's the most pleasant way to arrive from the south of the capital.

    cycling in Luxembourg

Weiler-la-Tour is the least populated municipality in the canton of Luxembourg, with 2,523 residents in three localities, Hassel, Syren and Weiler-la-Tour. It lies south of the capital among open fields, and its name hides a little trap that makes a good starting point.

A tower that didn’t name the village

You’d assume “la Tour” refers to the round tower on the coat of arms. visitguttland says not. That tower dates from 1750, appears on many official documents and, with a twin that has since vanished, guarded the entrance to the castle of the lords of Weiler. But the name goes back much further, to a barbican of a fortified Roman village. I enjoy stories where the official emblem and the real origin don’t match.

What’s worth seeing in Weiler-la-Tour?

The highlights are in Syren. That’s where the River Syre rises, the same river whose valley holds the Schlammwiss wetland further north in Schuttrange, and where the neo-Gothic church of 1850, a listed national monument, stands.

For walking, visitguttland points to the Steekauzewee, a themed trail dedicated to the little owl. For cycling, there are regional cycle paths, including the one named after Charly Gaul, Luxembourg’s great road-racing star. If exploring by bike appeals, there’s more in my guide to cycling in Luxembourg.

The barrel-organ festival

Every other year, on a summer Sunday, Syren holds the International Barrel Organ Festival. visitguttland describes the players spreading out through the streets and performing on squares, pavements, church steps and in the most unexpected corners, with a sound that seems to echo another age. It’s the sort of small local event that makes a trip worthwhile if the dates line up. visitguttland doesn’t publish the next edition’s date, so I’d look it up on the municipal website before counting on it. I won’t guess a date myself, because none has been announced.

A place people choose to live

visitguttland describes the municipality as a much sought-after place to live, and that shows in what it offers visitors, which is peace and quiet rather than monuments. Weiler-la-Tour is the main village, with Hassel and Syren making up the rest. For me the best way to get a feel for it is to cycle between the three on the regional paths, stopping at Syren church and the source of the Syre.

Is it worth the trip?

That depends on how you travel. With a car or a bike and three or more days in Luxembourg, Weiler-la-Tour makes a short countryside outing with a handsome church and a couple of waymarked walks. On a weekend break, I’d stick to the capital and heavier hitters such as the Mullerthal or the Moselle valley.

Fitting it in

I’d combine it with Contern to the north or Hesperange to the west, and base yourself in nearby Luxembourg City.

So you do not lose the morning at the ticket office, browse tickets and tours in Luxembourg on GetYourGuide.

If you would rather go at your own pace, see the car hire deals in Luxembourg: the earlier you book, the more cars are left to choose from.

Before you fix your dates, compare tickets to Luxembourg: the same journey can cost very different amounts from one day to the next.
