The Vianden chairlift crossing the River Our among trees, with the castle high on the hill in the background

2026 season, 4 April to 19 October

Vianden chairlift, Luxembourg's only one and the best seat for the castle

The Vianden chairlift is the only one in the Grand Duchy. It leaves from Rue du Sanatorium, crosses the Our and climbs to a café terrace facing the castle. The 2026 season runs from 4 April to 19 October; a return costs €9.50 for adults and €5 for under-14s, and it's free with the LuxembourgPass.

  • It's the only chairlift in Luxembourg, leaving from Rue du Sanatorium in Vianden.
  • It runs from 4 April to 19 October 2026.
  • A return is €9.50 for adults and €5 for under-14s; a single is €6.50.
  • The return trip is free with the LuxembourgPass.

I'd buy a single up and walk down through the woods to the castle. You save €3, you have the castle in front of you all the way down and you reach its gate without climbing a single hill.

What I would keep in mind

  1. 01 To save money

    Single up, walk down

A single up costs €6.50 against €9.50 for a return. visitluxembourg describes a path that drops through the woods, stops at the castle and crosses the old town back to the start.

  2. 02 To save money

    Free return with the LuxembourgPass

The pass covers the return trip. In Vianden it also covers the castle and the Victor Hugo House, so one day on the pass pays off with three visits.

  3. 03 Most beautiful

The top terrace faces the castle

Visit Éislek counts the top station among the region's viewpoints, looking over the town, the castle and the Our valley. You can get there by chair or on foot.

  4. 04 My tip

There's a souvenir photo on every ride

visitluxembourg notes that a souvenir photo is taken on each trip and offered at the top. You're under no obligation to buy it.

To see Vianden Castle whole, on its hill with the valley below, you have to get away from it, and the chairlift is the easiest way to do that. visitluxembourg describes it as the country’s only chairlift, and the best bit isn’t so much the ride as what’s waiting at the top, a café terrace looking straight across at the fortress.

A short ride with plenty to look at

The bottom station is at 39 Rue du Sanatorium, on the bank of the Our. The chair crosses the river and climbs the wooded slope to the top station. visitluxembourg talks of 440 metres above the Our valley, and the café terrace looks over the castle, the valley and the town.

A souvenir photo is taken on every ride and offered to you on arrival. There’s no obligation. Vianden itself has no railway, so most people without a car pair the chairlift with the train to Diekirch and the bus on to Vianden, all free within Luxembourg. From the capital that makes a comfortable day out with no need to hire a car. Visit Éislek includes the top station in its list of viewpoints for the region, alongside the Fändelchen, which also overlooks Vianden.

Fares and opening times for 2026

In 2026 it operates from 4 April until 19 October. At the end of September visitluxembourg showed 11am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 6pm on Saturday and Sunday, with a warning that times may change. Outside those dates it doesn’t run, which is worth knowing if you’re planning a November or Christmas trip.

A return costs €9.50 from age 14 and €5 for younger children. A single up is €6.50 and €3.50. Groups of 10 or more pay €8 return, and school classes €3. With the LuxembourgPass the return trip is free. Note that the child fare covers everyone under 14, a more generous cut-off than at the castle, where the children’s price stops at 12.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Vianden on Booking.com and filter by area before price.

Ride both ways, or walk down?

This is where I think most people get it wrong, buying a return out of habit. visitluxembourg describes a path that, with good shoes, heads down through the woods, stops at the castle and crosses the medieval town back to the start. In other words, walking down drops you at the gate of Vianden Castle without having to climb the hill.

My plan would be this. Chairlift up early in the afternoon, coffee on the terrace, walk down to the castle, visit, then back to the centre along the Grand-Rue. If you do it that way, bear in mind the castle closes at 5pm from 1 October with last entry half an hour earlier. In October I’d see the castle in the morning and leave the chairlift until after lunch.

With children

Under-14s have their own fare, and I find it one of the easiest wins with children anywhere in the north. It’s an open chair with no cabin, so with little ones I’d keep them close and make sure nothing is dangling. In summer, Vianden also has a heated open-air pool whose slide drops from 6.5 metres over a 65-metre run, which visitluxembourg describes as looking out over the valley and the castle.

To sleep close to everything, search places to stay in Vianden on Expedia and filter by area before price.

If you still fancy a walk afterwards

The walk down from the terrace is a taster of what the valley offers. visitluxembourg counts six walking routes leaving from the town itself, some towards the castle and others along the Our, and picks out the Ourdall Promenade as the most accessible and family-friendly. The country’s official portal puts it at 8.5 km to Stolzembourg, with ten stops on the valley then and now.

I’d save it for the next day rather than the chairlift day, and before setting off I’d check the bus back from Stolzembourg on mobiliteit.lu. Everything on that path lies within the Our Nature Park.

When it isn’t worth it

In fog or heavy rain, because what you’re paying for is the view. And on busy days, such as the summer medieval festival or the Nëssmoort on the second Sunday of October, which falls on 11 October in 2026, expect a queue. For the rest of the town and its surroundings, see the Vianden guide, and for a full day of viewpoints, the complete list is in best viewpoints in Luxembourg.

If you are short on time, see the best tours in Vianden chairlift and pick one that fits your day.

Where the bus does not go, a car does: compare car hire in Luxembourg before you arrive rather than at the desk.

If you still need a way in, check the best ticket deals to Luxembourg from where you are.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Vianden chairlift?

A return costs €9.50 from age 14 and €5 for under-14s. A single up is €6.50 and €3.50. These are visitluxembourg's guide prices in September 2026, and the return trip is free with the LuxembourgPass.

When does the Vianden chairlift close for the season in 2026?

The season runs from 4 April to 19 October 2026. In the last week of September it opened 11am to 5pm on weekdays and 10am to 6pm at weekends.

Where do you catch the Vianden chairlift?

The bottom station is at 39 Rue du Sanatorium, beside the Our, a short walk from the bridge in the centre of town.

Can you walk down from the chairlift?

Yes. With decent shoes, the path runs down through the woods, stops at the castle and crosses the old town back to the start, according to visitluxembourg.

Is the Vianden chairlift suitable for children?

Yes, and under-14s have their own fare, €5 return. It's an open chair over the valley, so with very young children keep them close and hold on to loose bags.

Is there a cable car in Vianden?

What Vianden has is a chairlift, not an enclosed cable car. It's the only one in the country and climbs from the riverbank to a café terrace facing the castle.
